The whole story only works better in abstract, which is why the 2D miniseries and this image are so much more evocative than the movies. It's much more appealing to think of Padme as a conflicted woman of virtue, driven by service while cursed to love an ill-omened man. Same for Anakin as an Elric, a warrior touched by darkness that simultaneously dooms and empowers him. It may even have been George's intention, given he described it as Wagner for kids. It just happens that George Lucas, for as much as he understands the social role of film, doesn't understand the language of film.
