Black Christmas, the first proper "slasher", came out on the same day as Chainsaw, but TCM is still a seminal work in the "psycho murdering a bunch of teenagers in gruesome ways with one girl surviving" genre. And 2 was pretty much a comedic slasher anyway.

I kind of think Evil Dead 2 is special to every single horror fan, doesn't mean it has to be your number 1 but its kind of hard not to fall in love with the genre after you watch it. It's one of the most infectious movies ever made.

You watch it and you can't help but insert yourself into the production of the film, you can see how much fun they had doing it

The Exorcist. Probably the most boring answer but it avoids all the pitfalls and cliches that make so many horror movies stupid and trashy.

Medicore. If you grew up in the era then I can could understand. Bad story all around, the slapstick gets more annoying, the one-liners are shoehorned into Ash who is a blank slate throughout. On the story point, there's so much potential in Army but Raimi fumbles it. The siege is pretty cool.

I don't share this opinion at all. The original Evil Dead is the one that genuinely frightened and traumatized me as a kid. Even though both films have elements of humor, I never really saw the point of the reboot/retread where they yuk it up. For me, this undercut the whole value of the original: the original is actually scary.

There are a number of rhymes and story elements that reward repeat viewing:

-Solar flare/eyeball. The film's opening credits use stylized footage of a solar flare to show that it's a very hot summer. A violent sphere, moving rapidly. These shots compare very well with the climax, which shows extreme close-ups of Sally's terrified, blood-shot eyeball. A violent sphere, moving rapidly.

-Pig ramp/Metal door. Early in the film, Franklin the piggy is let out of the house using a wooden ramp, so he can pee. Kirk (the biggest normie of the bunch) is the only one who insists on picking up the hitchhiker, everyone else knows not to do it. Kirk INVITES the hitchhiker into his house (the van), then closes the van's metal door behind him. Later, Kirk barges into the house UNINVITED, onto a piggy ramp, gets his reward, and has a metal door slammed shut on him.

-Two dollars. The hitchhiker demands two dollars as payment for his stupid snapshot, a dirty hobo trick. Kirk finally puts his foot down and says no. Later, approaching the house, Kirk hopes to barter for gas, this time hoping to give them "a couple bucks", or possibly his guitar.

-Guitar case/chainsaw. The van's interior has multiple shots of junk in the back. One of the more prominent items is Kirk's guitar, in a guitar case. The top of the guitar case has metal studs around the edge, making it look very similar to the blade of a chainsaw. The most obvious shot (IIRC) is when they eject the hitchhiker, and you see the top of the guitar case in close-up at the same time.

-Retrograde. Sally is trapped because she is moving backwards (like Pam's astrology), out the back window, back to the gas station. The only way out is to move forward again, through the front window onto the main road. She is the only one who proceeds this far forward, overall (the bench swing outside isn't good enough).

Thanks friend, I actually had a few of these on my October 2026 list already (I had to start making the 2026 list because I'm too far behind on my 2025 list as is). The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover is an interesting choice - saw it earlier this year in a theater and didn't totally resonate with it, might need a revisit.

I swear they coined the term psychological thriller just to avoid calling a spade a spade. Like, the academy wasn't ready for a horror film winning best picture so they pulled a label maker out their asses.

The same thing's happening now with the whole "elevated horror" label.

Predator has strong horror elements. Basically a slasher with Arnie as a final girl (not my original take, but true)

The film which you are about
to see is an account of the tragedy
which befell a group of five
youths, in particular Sally
Hardesty and her invalid brother,
Franklin. It is all the more tragic
in that they were young. But, had
they lived very, very long lives,
they could not have expected nor
would they have wished to see as
much of the mad and macabre as
they were to see that day. For
them an idyllic summer afternoon
drive became a nightmare.
The events of that day were to
lead to the discovery of one of
the most bizarre crimes in the
annals of American history, The
Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

I watched that real recently, and realized that I think it might be the first horror movie that I ever saw when I was five or six. I've had this image of a vampire with Raggedy Andy hair, and a giant bat skeleton burning in the sun, but had no idea what movie it was from. It was either that or Hellraiser 2, because I also used to have recurring nightmares about being chased by a skinless person crawling on the floor.
