Attack on Titan has the same director as Death Note, is generally really good, but the last like few episodes are so bad its like they changed writers. I cannot convey to you enough how bad the ending is. You have to be content imagining the show just ended without a conclusion to enjoy the first 90 percent, but it is one of the classic "I don't like anime but this is an exception" shows. But despite the ending I still consider the first 90 percent excellent, Jin Roh and Perfect Blue are easy recommendations for movies becuase they could easily be good live action movies, they just happen to be animated. A lot of the anime movies I like could be described as Saccharine though so I'm holding off on shit like Your Name. Like you tried 4 anime and liked two of them. If you want to try more try more, if you don't don't. Its always gonna be hits and misses for everyone. I also don't think Madoka is meant to be a particularly deep or subtle character drama. It leans a lot on style in what I think is an artistically legitimate way. You have to like the look and vibe of the world, the design and soundtrack and everything. Its not all about the plot and tension like something like Death Note.

This works as a closure for the whole "angel and other guy become friends" thing the movie tried to do, but the real reason is because mikami was there, who is basically unbeatable. Angel dude being there functioned as a plot device for hinting at mikamis true nature without actually showing what she can do.
