Why did this game get a movie?

I would imagine it's because PoP Sands of Time was a pioneer in atmospheric and narrative storytelling in vidya gaming

Like anon says. PoP was pretty popular for a minute there.

Because fuck you I liked it.
To be fair, your typical Hollywood videogame movie production process goes
>hollywood corpos and nepo babies acquire an IP straight from the publisher to exploit it
>write a fully original and unrelated script, they do whatever the fuck they want with the IP, they actually hate it
>sprinkle the practically unrecognizable movie with narrative and visual references to the games to bait the game fans
But in this case Mechner himself had been pushing to make a movie for years and even cowrote the script to be a mix of the original games and the SoT trilogy. He was lucky that Disney approached him back when Based Bruckheimer had Disney by the balls. Dude was equally interested in making something that actually felt like Prince of Persia.

If only they based a movie around the original PoP and not the goyslop that came after it
