The live action segments were more ridiculous than anything the actual cartoon did, which was a fairly straightforward adventure cartoon. Ernie Hudson showed up as a not-Ghostbuster to team up with Mario and Luigi once.

When this show came, the universe of Mario was extremely limited without a regular defined lore. This is why they mixed elements from Super Mario Bros and Super Mario Bros 2, and improvised a lot of random stories.
