It's a bit like Hitchcock's masterpiece North by Northwest, this crazy adventure mystery thriller but revolving around the occult. Both movies are rather humorous at times. I have no idea if Polanski was influenced by that movie I just see some similarities. Those two make a good double-feature probably.

it is a very appealing topic
we yearn for some clever twist in the riddles
and we yearn for something clever of what devil is like

we get neither, but we do get good atmosphere

Both of those are good, but the Deppkino is above them. They dont quite catch the eerie, mysterious atmosphere. Polanski nailed it.
