post Japanese films you liked but aren't well known.
tokyo trash baby
Immense soul in that one. I wish message board and irc culture were still like that.
whats the story?
>>215521225Godzilla
Eureka 2000
>>215521225The director, Yoshimitsu Morita, has made tons of kino as good as this but isn't well known in general.
>>215521225Dark Water is spookycomfykino
>>215521225this is one of the most well known japanese films
>>215521225If we don't count anime I think the only niche Japanese film I have seen is big man Japan. It's pretty good
>>215521225
Marebito is kino
The Cure
this movie rules
the one about the femcel that quits her office job and goes to america because she thinks the fargo treasure is real
The Ghost Cat of Otama Pond (1960) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtHyWMzzNAU&t>Although it's obviously modeled on Nobuo Nakagawa's Black Cat Mansion, which has a similar structure of starting in the present day before flashing back in time, I've always enjoyed the opening section to director Yoshihiro Ishikawa's film. It plays almost like a short film and doesn't contain any spoilers for the rest of the film.
>>215521225Fish Story.Kisaragi.I feel they used to be more popular on the internet.
Go, Go Second Time Virgin
>>215521225Dance with Me (2019).
>>215522181Wait, is that an actual movie? I assume it's a comedy?
>>215522435>>215522181Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter. It is an american film by a white directorhttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt3263614/
>>215522107H-Hayai!
ITT: Anons acting like somewhat well known Japanese films are obscure because they aren't Godzilla. If they have +2K imdb votes, they're not obscure.>>215521335This one is kind of well known. I prefer pic related by the same director, its focus on noise music made it a lot more niche and divisive
Guilty of Romance
This one is good but you need a bit of background knowledge around it's subject matter to follow it https://www.myjapanesegreentea.com/sen-no-rikyu
The Man Who Stole the Sun.
>>215521727I wish Konaka wrote more movies
Strange Circus
>>215521225https://letterboxd.com/filmcharts/list/film-s-trip-around-the-world-east-asia/country/japan/
i saw this the other day and was pleasantly surprised, the soundtrack has been stuck in my head since i walked out of the theater!
>>215521225it felt like reading a book
>>215521225funeral parade of roses (1969)
>>215523839What happens to the cat in this movie is crazy
>>215521694one of my favorite movies
Watched this recently on Kanopy. It would be a lot better if they tightened up the runtime but it was good.
There are a decent amount of j movies itt that I've never heard of. But I've seen a lot that I bet no one has seen .
>>215524578post em then. that is the point of the thread afterall
>>215524655Nah . I'm too lazy now to curate a list. Maybe some more later if the thread is dying
>>215524728pls do it senpai
>>215521225Welcome Back, Mr. McDonaldIt's a funny wholesome comedy.
>>215521694>>215524298>you now realize it has a shitty American remake starring Jennifer Connelly
>>215524728it doesn't have to be a whole list, just post one or two
>>215521240a true femcel
>>215522778>durr you plebs wouldn't even begin to understand muh obscure films!!!Why do faggots like you always have to enter a thread and shit on everyone? The majority of the movies posted ITT are ones that 90% of the general populace wouldn't know about, just be glad that anons here are still trying to watch new things and discuss them.
monday from 2000, soundtrack is nice, really good comedy
August in the Water is absolute schizokino. When I first heard of it, it was virtually unknown even in Japan, but recently it seems to have become more widely-seen among "movie buffs", which is weird because it isn't particularly accessible. I wonder if some redditboxd fag made a video essay on it, or whatever.
>>215523839>>215524214Can you at least post a title for those who can't into moonrunes?
>>215521225i feel old
>>215525255Shinjuku Love Story
I love this one, which is basically just a long music video of Ryoko's music with a thin story.
>>215521225Why they didn't just hire some hebrew to play Boyacky
>>215521225I didn't like this one.
>>215521225the man who stole the sun and poppoya. I imagine those two films are more well known that others, but they are great films and more people should watch them
>>215525243>it isn't particularly accessible.What do you mean?
If you know Japanese experimental short film then you'll probably know this. But still:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFjUtl2Xwb4Epilepsy warning, there are flashing lights for most of it.
>>215525243It's always been well known in film circles that actually watch and discuss non american movies. The director is very good but his others aren't anywhere as well known.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_mEizsGcU0One of my favorites... main character is literally me (except for the BL stuff)
>>215525612It's just a strange movie with very little dialogue, lots of atmospheric panning shots mixed with sudden sequences of loud, dissonant music and flashing cuts. It's disorienting, and discomforting, on purpose. But it feels like a movie that many people would dismiss for the simple fact that it's difficult to get into the story which is barely laid out or elaborated directly upon.>>215525656Interestingly I knew of the Ishii for his earlier work, which were mostly all delinquent/punk movies that Hideo Kojima said he loved in an old interview.
>>215521225Monster (2023)
Can anyone help me find Gulf Bad Girls?
>>215523065>""Big"" Tits
>>215526278Maybe it's the zombies that have big tits? I hope so.
>>215521694Kino but pretty well known. Best Japanese atmosphere of the j horror movies I've seen though
>>215526628I doubt it, sir.
>>215525907Wait, what the hell, the same guy who did Electric Dragon 80000V? I loved that shit.
Séance 2000
>>215521225Outside of Kurosawa and Kitano, is any of it well known?Either way Linda Linda Linda is a great movie. Think I've seen it talked about a few times here
>>215521240Based
>>215522562meh I'm counting it

>>215521225recently watched this as part of my october listit was short and fun, all the monsters are silly as hell lol. plenty of time is spent on the samurai drama plot tho. supposedly the sequel is better so ill prolly check it out this week
I don't read moon you niggers
Tobenai chinmoku
>>215529499You'd probably enjoy Legend of the Eight Samurai
Any horror movies?
>>215521355his breakout was often listed on critics' best. FAMILY GAME with YUSAKU "/tv/" MATSUDA. He kinda petered out when I first saw his Keiho with the hottest cast of the time
Dream of Garuda. A pinku that has a poetic style for soapy baths. Maybe it doesn't hold up but it was transfixing. >>215528958If you like Canary, Antena 2003 has the same bleak children adrift thing going. Ryo Kase's breakout, and he hasn't really matched it.
Woman of Water with the kino machine Tadanobu Asano
It's not really obscure and probably especially known here since RLM recommended it, but i love One Cut of the Dead. It's just so good. I rewatched it again one of these days and it just seems to get even better the more you watch it
For pinku fans: Raigyo. The director made another really interesting looking one called Hysteric but still no subs and seems like there's no way to nudge someone to sub it.
>>215521225Yusaku Matsuda
>>215530169Onibaba
>>215524327Watched this like 30 years ago and loved it.
>>215521225Absolute retarded thread starting by the OP with a film apparently no one knows (lol), followed by every other retard posting other really unknown films such as cure kek
>>215531354There's some obscure ones in, cunt.
>>215531429Respect where it's due. I wouldn't in such a dumb thread
>>215531523You're just mad there's actual movies posted instead of the usual le japan only silly animu live action and porn.
>>215521225I don’t know how known it is truthfully.
>>215527450Right? Apparently he wanted to do something completely different when he made August, and that's part of why it stuck with people is that it was totally out of nowhere.>>215528055Ozu is also well known among international "film buffs". In general J-movies tend to be well known individually rather than grouped by who worked on them, I feel. LLL is a well known movie like that, so is All About Lilly ChouChou for instance.
>>215531698All of his movies are pretty different.
>>215521225Bright Future. The only thing I dislike is how the ending is sort of disconnected from the rest of the movie.
>>215521225Sword of the Stranger
>>215521225Kurosawas lesser known Noir. Truthfully, my introduction to Japanese Noir and Kurosawa. I had watched Ran and Yojimbo once in high school but it doesn’t really count because I didn’t pay much attention. Blown away by how much I liked Stray Dog
>>215521225>aren't well known. This board only knows 2 japanese filmsLove Exposure and Cure.So i could post literally almost anything else and it'd be considered not well known here. The last 3 jap films i saw wereLocke the Superman - MediocreGolgo 13: The Professional - Slightly above average. The best thing about it was the commentary with Johnathan ClementsThe Burmese Harp - Dull and dreary historical film with a one sided, borderline dishonest portrayal of the japanese during wartime.
>>215522107Puffy Cheek-kun is kino.
>>215524327Koreeda is always kino.I like that they got ordinary people to play the parts of the recently deceased.Koreeda used to make nothing but documentaries, so this was a nice nod to his documentary style roots.
>>215532000>acting like a pretentious fuck when you're watching fucking Golgo 13Lel
>>215528958>Sono SionYa blew it.
>>215524578Most people haven’t seen the live action version of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.https://youtu.be/p1xoU5E-8Yc
Zatoichi
>>215521225Ima Boku Wa. Hikki channer is forced to touch grass
>>215532486Why would they, the anime version is kino
The "serious" Japanese films can generate a mystical aura with their insistence on quiet, but often they're just boring and up their on ass.
>>215530169Yes, lots of folk ghost stories like:>>215522290
>>215532786Oh, so a horror movie.
