The Ghost Cat of Otama Pond (1960) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtHyWMzzNAU&t
>Although it's obviously modeled on Nobuo Nakagawa's Black Cat Mansion, which has a similar structure of starting in the present day before flashing back in time, I've always enjoyed the opening section to director Yoshihiro Ishikawa's film. It plays almost like a short film and doesn't contain any spoilers for the rest of the film.

August in the Water is absolute schizokino. When I first heard of it, it was virtually unknown even in Japan, but recently it seems to have become more widely-seen among "movie buffs", which is weird because it isn't particularly accessible. I wonder if some redditboxd fag made a video essay on it, or whatever.

One of my favorites... main character is literally me (except for the BL stuff)
>>
>>215525612
It's just a strange movie with very little dialogue, lots of atmospheric panning shots mixed with sudden sequences of loud, dissonant music and flashing cuts. It's disorienting, and discomforting, on purpose. But it feels like a movie that many people would dismiss for the simple fact that it's difficult to get into the story which is barely laid out or elaborated directly upon.

Ozu is also well known among international "film buffs". In general J-movies tend to be well known individually rather than grouped by who worked on them, I feel. LLL is a well known movie like that, so is All About Lilly ChouChou for instance.

>aren't well known.
This board only knows 2 japanese films
Love Exposure and Cure.
So i could post literally almost anything else and it'd be considered not well known here.

The last 3 jap films i saw were
Locke the Superman - Mediocre
Golgo 13: The Professional - Slightly above average. The best thing about it was the commentary with Johnathan Clements
The Burmese Harp - Dull and dreary historical film with a one sided, borderline dishonest portrayal of the japanese during wartime.
