Why are movies made by musicians always weird?

Generally they are not directors or have any cinematic vision, so the few who really want to make a movie either make complete shit that's mostly crafted by the hired crew (Madonna's filmography) or they just have a few visual ideas they want to express (FlyLo's films, not counting all the porn he shot with Madison Ivy).
Obviously GWAR would make something ridiculous because that's their brand.

Musicians are good at telling 3-minute long stories with music and words. When they stretch it out to an hour and a half with visuals and acting it comes across as thin soup or variations on a theme. True Stories (by David Byrne) is the latter, while Human Highway (by ?Neil Young) is the former. Musicians have novelty-minded creativity, so they are drawn to over the top visuals and situations and sketch-like structure when they make a film, as Young and Byrne's films are similarly structured. Otherwise they're so far up their own ass they make slop (like Zappa's film output) or dreck (like Paul McCartney's lifeless Give My Regards to Broad Street or Jim Morrison's HWY).
