>revives kino in japan
>movie critics in his country shit on him for it
Why did they do it?
>>
it was just a lucky golden generation of world class pioneers followed by their students who all died off in the 80s 90s exact same hting happened to france, hollywood centralization killed off productions in the rest of the world
>>
Now Hollywoods relying them to make new movies pretty much they weren't wrong

The generations that made kino between the 1920s and 1960s died or retired by the 80s, and Japanese audiences chose to stop going to the theaters around that time, instead watching TV shows and their variety programs. So the producers focused a lot more in TV stuff, especially as anime and manga began to grow.
The 90s saw a brief resurgence in their cinema thanks to a talented new generation that could make very cheap movies, the Japanese V-cinema era. By the late 90s and early 2000s they had a good industry once more, but it was only their swan song as the dominance of anime and video games completely buried the investment into Japanese cinema. Most Jap filmmakers worth a shit release 1 movie every 5 years now, the few of them still alive and working that is, and their quality has dropped too. There's basically no promising Japanese directors anymore.
Asian cinema in general is basically dead these days, the worst it has ever been. The Hong Kong industry was tragically buried by the Chinese commies, the Korean generation that rose in the 90s is on its last legs (0 great movies in the 2020s), China doesn't even try to make good movies and just goes for blockbuster slop, Taiwan is basically the same as Japan in making 1 good movie every 10 years, etc.
The whole thing is tragic.

Not op but from the end of WW2 up to the end of the 90s, Japan was one of the biggest producers of kino on the planet. Up there with France and the USA.

Their TV drama flourished during both the boom era, and the 90's and even 00's.
