>movie critic makes a movie
>it fucking sucks
Why does this keep happening?
>>
>>215532314
Who made it?
>>
>>215532314
I'd challenge most food critics to start a restaurant
>>
You have to surround yourself with the right people. As director you can haev a vision, but being able to get the right people to execute it is a whole other task. Same with being able to communicate it in an actionable way. I can be a critic and say that such and such actor's performance was shit. But put me in the director's chair and having to work on making it not shit is a whole other skill. And will that actor listen because some don't. This is why critics can see what's wrong and say it eloquently but not be able to make something great themselves.
>>
>>215532314
Being able to critically evaluate a movie is not the same as being able to create a good movie. Those are different processes. So it's not surprising.
>>
>>215532356
Chris Stuckmann. Not even joking.

>As director you can haev a vision, but being able to get the right people to execute it is a whole other task
this goes both ways btw - oftentimes deeply flawed directors can produce incredible movies thanks to a competent set of cast, crew and producers (but it's mainly the crew)

I suppose it's commendable he made an actual movie and it got a release but could he have not chosen something a bit more interesting

Not good, not offensively bad.
Simply put, a movie.

Critics become critics in the first place because they can't create.

Many of the youtube Shelby Oaks reviews are negative. Lots of stuff in the movie simply doesn't make sense with the script mainly to blame. For example 99% of people noticed the women leaving blood on her face for a day and the husband saying nothing about it. So many goofy laughable mistakes like that.
>>
>>215532567
Valley of the dolls is way better than anything Stuckmann will ever make. I honestly respect Ebert’s opinions more since he understands how the entire movie system machine works, and chose to direct his critique there.
Stuckmann still has a child’s understanding of movie making, even his criticisms of movies is a child’s understanding.

Horror is the cheapest genre. He raised 1.4 million for it. Chris made one of the worst movies I have ever seen. He doesn't have the mental capacity to create something interesting. It's a miracle he was able to make something with over 50% fresh.

Ridley scott in particular is a fucking enigma to me. How the same person can be responsible for masterpieces like gladiator, body of lies, the extended cut of kingdom of heaven, alien, only to then shit out nothing but shit for the last decade. it can't just be that he got old. I personally think it's a bit like nolan where the more power a director gets in hollywood as his career progresses (and the older/more senior he gets) the more individual control they have over a production which leads to their individual flaws becoming magnified and the movies getting worse (incidentally, I'm somewhat dreading the Odyssey). But even considering this ridley's fall-off in quality is insane.
>>
>>215533194
I think his style of directing only works with a certain type of actor. When you hear Russel Crowe talk about it, I can definitely see how a lot of other actors would struggle. He says the script for Gladiator was absolutely fucked and they were done filming all of the scripted stuff in under 2 weeks.
>>
>>215533194
if you watch the mo alien, he had pretty good exes/producers calling the shots. and he too was surrounded with top tier talent from top to bottom

Cousin is a chef, Amazing cook. Floats the the idea of starting a restaurant. As an administrator he can run a kitchen by himself, I think he could successfully run any existing franchise restaurant. I have no confidence a brand new business would last more than five years. I don't believe he has in his blood to market and advertise to draw attention to a unknown entity. His family has enough money to float him in the hardest early years. I have no illusion that once that seed money runs out it will ever succeed.

Some of the worst dialogue I've ever read
>>
>>215533395
I briefly worked as an intern at a VC firm once and it really opens your eyes up to how unhinged the environment for small / new businesses really is. I don't think most people who go into entrepreneurship (whether it's a restaurant or a mom and pop store or a tech startup) ever truly understand how fucked it's gonna be for you.
>>
>>215532834
if there's one thing that grinds my gears with shitty scripts it's the constant fucking non sequiturs. it's like you're switching to a whole new conversation every two lines.
>>
>>215532900
why does he walk like that?

Critics know when something is bad, they don't know how to make something good. It's a totally different skillset.

Ridley's what a call a concept director. He reads a screenplay, or probably just a pitch. Thinks it sounds hella cool, then throws bodies at it and sits behind the camera to make sure it looks good.
Everything else is up in the air. If it works, it works, but since screenwriting has arguably gotten worse, and/or more abundant, his films have gotten shittier as well. Still entertaining, mind you, but the stories and editing especially seem to make no sense nowadays.
Then again, Blade Runner has seven different cuts, and they all suck, so who knows? All I know is Napoleon was the funniest unintentional comedy I've seen in a long time.

I've been saying this from the start. Now I want you all to say it with me:

CONSOOMERS CAN'T BE CREATORS

>but he creates youtube content

Ridley Scott is a machine. He can put a movie together faster and more efficiently than anyone in the industry. He has always been like this. He likes high-concept material and knows how it make it look good. It's just that he puts no fucking thought or soul into it. Even his handful of triumphs like Blade Runner aren't really that interesting in characterization and only work because the concept is especially presented well. In my opinion, a very overrated artist, and it's funny you mention Nolan in your post because Scott is his chief influence.
>>
>>215534279
I always think of Crowe telling Ridley he should have like a motto or something he addresses everyone with. Specifically "Forza et Honorum" and Ridley just goes "what the fuck does that mean?" and Crowe told him it means "Strength and Honour" and Ridley goes "Well fucking say that then." and that's why Maximus says "Strength and Honour". Ridley really does just do shit he likes the sound of.
>>
Are these posts supposed to make Ridley look bad? He's so based it's unreal
