He's envious that he lost all his humanity in the same ritual Elena went through as an infant, whereas he came out weak, she retained her purity and gained more powerful psychic abilities. He snaps when after realizing he dedicated his life to a meaningless institute to satisfy his pathetic boss, who was once a spiritual leader to Barry, was reduced to shitting in diapers and watching TV like a mindless boomer. Because there was nothing to the cult. He lost everything and is just as much a captive to Elena as he is her captor. There's nothing he has left after taking out Dr. Arborea, peeling back the false image of a sane man and the wife he hasn't loved in over a decade. He trips himself up because he's utterly blinded by rage at this child who's sheer existence dismantles his self-image of a powerful man. What could he do but risk that step forward? He has nothing human to fall back on.

Addresses corporate fascism and dedication to ultimately meaningless ideals that nonetheless transform you as a person in adherence and pursuit to this false god. A thinking man's horror movie, where we see both victim and tormenter on a (somewhat) balanced scale. She is captive by force, he is captive by choice. Once want and control diverge, things get a bit messy. More people should watch this film. It is so outside what we usually see in film and addresses wildly esoteric concepts never really seen (Safe ((1995)) is the closest I can think of right now) in movies.
