The studio felt the ending was too dark and proposed a bunch of alternatives, which were all shot down by David Fincher.>Mills drops the gun and brings John Doe in.>Mills shoots John Doe non-lethally and brings him in.>Sommerset throws his knife at Mills' arm to disarm him and they bring John Doe in.>Mills shoots Sommerset so he won't interfere with him killing John Doe.>Sommerset shoots John Doe before Mills can so John Doe doesn't win.>The head in the box belongs to Mills and Tracy's dog, and Mills and Sommerset then have to find Tracy, who has been abducted by John Doe.>Instead of turning himself in, John Doe lures Mills and Sommerset into a trap at an abandoned church which he sets on fire. John Doe captures Mills, ties him up and carves a cross on his chest, causing him to bleed to death. Sommerset is too late to save Mills and shoots John Doe in a rage, completing the seven sins. Tracy survives and leaves the city heartbroken, while Sommerset decides not to retire anymore.Would any of them have worked?
