Dean Cundey is a great dp
>>
Carpenter had like 3 good movies in 60 years
>>
>>215540376
It wasn't scary and nothing about the body horror is anything you haven't seen already. Its only praised for its message.
>>
>>215540376
I love how perpetually high Carpenter sounds.

Seeing woman moment after woman moment unfold and the women actually suffer consequences for it was pretty funny though

>>215540376
I honestly liked Substance up until the last ten minutes or so. It went from a 7/10 to a 5/10 off the back of the ending for me.

>>215540376
I've never seen it but I like Carpenter's movies so I'm inclined to agree.

i liked the ending sequence, but yep, it was a stretched black mirror episode

he's obviously just jealous his movies never included extended aerobics class ass closeup scenes.
>>

Not that I really care because it's nothing great and certainly not as good as Carpenter's best films but this would honestly be pretty devastating for the chick that directed it. She's named Carpenter as an influence and a filmmaker she loves numerous times. Imagine how it would feel to be told by one of your heroes that they hated your most prominent work.

I don't think he should be prevented from voicing his opinion, I'd encourage more filmmakers to be as honest with theirs, but that chick would still feel like shit. That's not a good or bad thing, it's just a thing.

My fav. horror movies are pretty much The Thing, The Shining and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, i think they all made foundations for movies to come later and TRY TO perfect it.
>>215540376
He is correct of course. The movie felt like overlong '90s music video and i have no idea why it could have not been 90min runtime.
The ending tried ot say something but it went hollow.

Your genereation never had a good movie and never will
>>
>>215540942
not at all, i just think its pointless. you will want to retaliate and so forth. just assume i name 10 movies that you hate to save us both some time. in my honest opinion you could pick any horror movie that was released in the last 10 years with an imdb rating above 6 and i would say it is better as a movie than the thing. carpenter is obviously amazing at some things, especially coming up with imagery and music that stays with you, but he is not good at storytelling
>>
I didn't like The Thing or Halloween.
>>
>>215540376
John Carpenter?I

Isn't he the guy who made loads of films about a dead paedophile meeting up with kids in their dreams and doing unspeakable things to them?

that's at least 4 kino certified classics, and his other movies are still good

Shut up, Andy.

to be fair as far as I know she hasn't said anything about his opinions. But the opinion of someone you genuinely admire and aspire to be like is different to some random guy on the internet or faggot critic.
If I were her that's what I would do. I'd have my agent/manager set up a meeting so I could discuss what he actually hated about it and how he felt I could improve as a filmmaker.

The Substance is about not wasting your life with vapid shit, and John Carpenter thinks that marrying and having children is anuddah Shoah, so it checks out.

They Live
The Thing
Big Trouble in Little China
Escape From New York
Vampires

Vampires was the movie that made me respect Ebert. He straight up said that James Woods deserved an Oscar for that movie. The movie itself he didn't like but James Woods went so hard in that movie he loved every second of him being on screen and if someone can do such a bang up job with a role they make what would have been a shit movie really fun to watch, that person should get recognized for the achievement.
>>
>>215541055
Big Trouble in Little China is a lot of fun and the rest of his 'Apocalypse Trilogythat The Thing is a part of is good too
>>
>>215542080
Actually, my bad, Siskel wanted Woods to get the Oscar. Ebert agreed that Woods was far and away the best part of the movie and deserved the praise he got for his role though.

I like how much of a dick he is but at the same time Im sure it feels bad. Eli Roth, now I don't like his movies, but he seems like just a guy who enjoys horror so having Carpenter who I'm sure is one of his favorite directors insult him has to feel bad, same with the french chick who directed substance. Cronenberg and Aronofsky deserve it THOUGH
>>
the underlying message was very heavy handed, but I think it's a fun, well made body horror.
still doesn't hold a candle to Carpenter's best films.

>just let people enjoy things
If you watch the interview he doesn't say anything bad towards the interviewer who said he liked The Substance, so he literally lets people enjoy things despite himself not finding the movie good. I only didn't like that he snarkily replied to the question of "what didn't you like about it" with "everything". Fuck does that even mean. And mind you, Carpenter was the one to ask the question about The Substance to the interviewer, not the other way around, he started the conversation.
>>
>>215541292
>he didn't even look at me
Carpenter literally describes the situation as "Cronenberg was holding court". I assume he literally didn't see him. Maybe try saying hello or something.

1. Wes Craven made Nightmare
2. Freddy is shown as an evil guy doing evil things. How is that a writers fetish? Or do you just search for straws to pull but from a snowman instead of scarecrow?
>>
>>215543003
What, he didn't like the excellent practical effects either? There could've at least elaborated on what specifically bugged him about at least one of the things. "I didn't like the cinematography cause it had super weird closeups which I found annoying" or "I usually like electronic music, i literally write soundtracks myself, but I thought the soundtrack here was ass, annoying". At least something like that. Again, if the interviewer was the one to bug him with the question I would get the response, but he was the one who started the conversation only to brush it off immediately.
>>
>>215540376
Can't blame him. The "Substance" was without any substance.
>>
I liked the substance but the ending was retarded pretentious shit. I also see why Carpenter might hate it. Back in his era it was all about having fun with a horror concept. Nowadays everything needs to have le meaning and be a metaphor for something. I mean, old horror films also did this but were less subtle about it.
>>
>>215541292
Masters of Horror was shit so I'm inclined to believe the majority of them are entitled pricks.

>>215543161

>>
>>215540930
He also made Escape from LA which was shit.
>>
>>215543161
So what you're saying is, old horror films had more substance?
>>
The Substance was shit, he is totally right.
The writing is just bad, the characters are dumb in a weird way, it's too self aware. The whole "woman ages and becomes irrelevant" theme was not throughly explored to be called a social critique, or a comedy, or a horror. it's just too heavy handled.
>>
>>215540775
I wouldn't care.
>>
>>215543264
LA was the kind of profoundly shit movie that has to be a shitpost and I like it for that.
>>
You don't understand
I'm playing a caricature

Are you sure
>>
>>215543265
they had less substance. that's what made them fun. when the substance lost its substance in the end and went stupid, it was just stupid because you were like "what do they mean by this" instead of going "man, this shit is fun". the substance is the worst part of the substance.
>>
>>215540376
I thought John Carpenter was dead!?
>>
>>215540593
don't they still suggest it's because of the expectations men or society place on them or some dumb shit? Scenes like Dennis Quaid eating he shrimp?

The Substance was dogshit because the premise doesn't even make sense. Each body is separate despite the movie trying to convince you otherwise. Evident by the fact they continually betray each other and wake up to the other fucking up their lives.

Now imagine if I said you could have everything you want in life, BUT you have to sleep in a closet for every second week and you don't get to experience the good parts. You'd tell me to fuck off.
