Saw the first episode, what did I think of it?

woke garbage

If you'll watch low grade kingslop like this you'll suck a dick.

you thought that HBO has completely lost the plot and all that is good in our culture has been subverted, you furthermore thought that you should drink less and exercise more.

Better than the movies already thanks to the stronger pacing and unease of the town

It's commendable that they have had zero clown imagery for the first episode

The flying baby-bat thing was stupid but you can't really have an IT adaptation without shit like that so whatever

The 2017 remake would have been better as a TV show based on what I've seen

After finding out the military is trying to locate Pennywise to use against the Russians but have to convince Native Americans who were saving humanity from Pennywise by shaking chicken bones at dirt while chanting to help them, I dipped out hard.

Like, the entire concept of adults not being able to register his existence is just gone now. But don't worry, there will be four episodes at the minimum driving home the point "Did you know, racism is evil. More evil than kid eating outer gods."

The worst thing about it was that the horror scenes had 0 impact and were laughable. It genuinely felt like scooby doo.
The second worst thing was that the rest of the show felt like it was trying to imitate stranger things, and failing. The desperate attempts to get the audience to relate to these annoying kids... The whole thing was just boring.
Overall, I'd say it was formulaic, pseudo-horror slop for the kids halloween market.
>>
>>215544953
I have read IT seven times. Adults do notice yes, so this Anon was wrong in that way. But they also are immediately under IT's kind of "mindfog" because they are so out of touch from their inner child.
It's laughable the army would understand IT's existence without IT obfuscating it from their mind (when IT can do so on the whole fucking town).
>>
>>215544992
Id say that's likely because Stranger Things is just a ripoff of IT and Stand By Me
>>

Am I retarded? When did this happen?
>>
>>215545071
Because of the painful lack of subtlety in every other IT adaptation. Not doing the "spooky clowns scare me" off the rip already gives the series more artistic merit than the movies it's based on when it could have been so easy
>>
>>215545071

the point is that, as far as tv shows go, stranger things actually did the 'kid storyline' thing to a decent standard. It chapter 1 also did a good job. Episode 1 of welcome to derry was boring slop, I don't think I'd even call it horror, and it certainly doesn't do the book justice. It is imitating stranger things (poorly) far more than it is drawing upon the source material. Of course there is the dumbass turtle reference so the 'fans' can pull a basedface during that scene. But overall it's just pure slop, I don't see how anyone could've enjoyed that episode.

I do like how he can independently manipulate his eyes though. It lead to this gem where one of the actors asked how they were pulling off the effect.

The design, mannerisms, and his voice are just trying hard to be scary instead of just being a clown, that looks and sounds like a clown, that happens to be doing creepy shit.

We really wanted to create a subversion to get people excited. It has to do also with raising the volume a little in terms of intensity and spectacle.”
>Andy Muschietti on the ending of the first episode
Killing off the kids was good in terms of story mechanics but the clusterfucks they try to pass off as scary are too much. They need to tone shit that down--Pennywise shaking his head back and forth at 5x speed and running toward the camera while making Three Stooges sounds is dumb as is the CG demon baby. There was no reason for the baby to come back at the end of the episode either--it would honestly have been a lot better if it were just a B movie monster the kids would have been familiar with.

I liked that the kids thought that it was really Matty trying to get a hold of them. If we didn't know as an audience that Pennywise was most likely just messing with them, it would have been a believable concept in a supernatural show like this. Dead or kidnapped wanting to be saved and using some magic shit to reconnect with his friends.

Man this was the dumbest shit I've seen in a long time. Why even take the time to introduce us to our two main characters just to kill them off like "Haha fooled you! They weren't main characters at all" Yeah my expectations were subverted alright, but not in a good way.

I thought the flying bloodsucking clams was an ass pull by Pennywise because that particular kid was a literal sociopath that was incapable of experiencing fear. Seem to recall Pennywise just being kinda blurry where it was just confused because the kid was giving him absolutely nothing to latch on to make him afraid at all so he just said "fuck it. Clams, I guess" and he drained the kid like a juice box. It's worth noting because it solidifies the concept that Pennywise does NOT feed off the fear of others for sustence.

Subversion is fine when you're on a path that's already well tread. It's the clusterfuck "scares" that suck (i.e. "intensity and spectacle"). Just because something is fast and loud doesn't make it intense and spectacle can be a bad thing.
>>
>>215549398
>It's worth noting because it solidifies the concept that Pennywise does NOT feed off the fear of others for sustence.
He kind of does. It feeds off of psychic energy for his power and flesh for It's physical form. The reason he has a lower power level fighting the Losers is their connection to one another makes them stronger and they make one another believe they can beat It.

The baby is a spawn of It that it is trying to raise by itself by setting it up easy kills because it's from an egg of It that was exposed to nuclear radiation. Think of it. Baby being born, radio talking about mutations, Pennywise luring the kids to the theater and locking them in, the boy holding the bundle in the screen like it's a baby before releasing it on the kids. Clearly a child of It. Intentionally or unintentionally created the military I'm not sure, but I'm going to guess intentional in an effort to weaponize It.

yeah, but it's probably a crossover with a bunch of other Stephen King stuff like The Shop and Project Arrowhead. like how almost every other book that even partially takes place in Derry references It.

What's with all the people passing off headcanon as if it were lore and making up rules ITTs? The basics are:
>It is an eldritch horror that takes on various forms (Pennywise the clown being the one It favors)...it is a glamour
>It isn't restricted to hunting children but chooses to do so for intentionally ambiguous reasons
>certain people have a preternatural ability to sense it, this is linked to youth and likely a reason why it attacks kids
>It's evil nature infests the town and this brings out the worst in people (e.g. willful ignorance and avoidance)
>Its powers are based on psychic energy and it can warp/corrupt minds (usually by taking advantage of existing evil, which makes a given mind susceptible, and magnifying it)
>It can also read minds to a certain degree (besides evil it can sense trauma/fear and will manifest a form related to these to scare/intimidate victims/targets)
>Its hubris is that it is cocky, it sees itself as an eternal among lesser beings, but is still defensive to an extent
>It is susceptible to willful disregard of it's psychic powers, this disarms it to a degree, but can still physically injure regardless
>believing you can harm it combined with physical attack is enough to inflict blows (imbuing objects with a belief in their power inflicts harm on it)
>social bonds make adversaries of it more powerful
It has no restriction in terms of where it can manifest its powers. There are no restrictions when it comes to the age of its victims. Derry is a particularly bad place because it has always been there and has always infested the land upon which the town was built (it is corruption).

>Not quite when you take into consideration the book
It's the same in both the book and the film versions. Fear "flavors the meat" for his physical form but he needs sustenance in the form of negative psychic energy for his powers to be effective. It isn't a psychic vampire that needs to syphon life force in order to live, its physical form feeds on flesh, but without suitable levels of negative psychic energy, which it puts in effort to generate, its powers are lessened. That's why the social bond between the Losers weakens it and it tries to pick them off one by one. There's also mojo beyond the Losers themselves, they said they feel like they were being directed and things were happening for a reason, that's left ambiguous and is likely linked to the turtle.
>>
>>215554012
That's one level to it. The other level is that it's more evil to harm children, there's a greater corruption in it, and its maliciousness is better fed by preying on them.

The physical form stuff is pretty overt relative to the eldritch horror aspects of it. For the latter the more ambiguous you leave it the more engaging, and potentially terrifying, it is for the audience. I think you could make an argument that the physical manifestation vs the eldritch nature of it works well before the former is based on fear while the latter is terror. I recall reading something from King where he addresses the fear v. terror distinction in the horror genre.
>>
So how long until Pennywise actually shows up?

THIS SOUNDS UNWATCHABLE WTF AM I READING
>>
>>215554187
Well, in the book IT is actually quite capable of killing off the kids willy nilly. Infact it's about to do that when it's cockblocked by the turtle. The turtle is what allowed the loser's club to fight back, not just their bond. Their bond helped sure, but it alongside the ritual of chud and the turtle is what allowed them to defeat IT..... temporarily. As far as the sustenance thing....also not quite true. IT is actually an eldritch being who has existed for an unfathomably long period of time. It's actually explained in the book that IT can survive however it pleases, but it just likes the taste of kids. These misconceptions are why people think Freddy Krueger beats IT when that's quite far removed from the truth. Infact the movies should just lean into whole cosmic horror angle. So far they just emphasize too much of his clown form and body horror while making him a jobber.

And just as a side note
>For his powers to be effective
This may sound like powerscaling wank, but IT does explain in a monologue that he can basically become an asteroid and just kill everyone if he wants. There is no actual limit to his power besides that which IT imposes on itself like the weakness of each form it takes (werewolf = silver bullet and so on). Yeah the book is full of stuff like this.

>>
>>215555956
Well, it's in a self monologue written by King. It's one of the few times we actually see IT think. He has no reason to lie to himself. It makes no sense for him to lie to himself when he doesn't know we're reading (some king characters literally do this though, looking at the last stand). The kids aren't even nearby.

Kids couldn't act worth shit, the CGI bat mutant looked like shit, a lot of the horror scenes had shit off about them (why was the family in the beginning screaming in shock and horror when the mom gave birth to the baby mutant bat when they're just part of It's Illusion). Also what was the deal with the whole airforce base shit and the presumably Soviet spies trying to get the schematics of the B-52 from Hanlon? What does that have to do with anything? Is It colluding with the Russians to steal the schematics for a B-52 so he can shapeshift into one so he can carpet bomb Derry with balloons or is it just going to be some gay subplot that has fuck all to do with anything.

Yes, that's more or less explicitly stated in the novel. Instead of targeting adults directly, It casts a sort of spell over Derry as a town that prevents most (adult) people from looking into or caring about what is happening*, which explains why no one outside the town is aware of the fact that, even in "off" years, Derry has a child murder/disappearance rate that would be extremely alarming national news.
*there are mentions of people who end up fleeing the town regularly, but it's more out of a general feeling of fear/unease than any specific knowledge

This is the third time I have to explicitly tell you the Black Spot burning down will happen in this show but has not happened yet. The Black Spot and Mike's race were sub-sub-sub plots in the book, race is a CENTRAL THEME in this series.

That's incorrect as 1) The Black Spot was burned down by white supremacists and, 2) Mike Hanlan is called a nigger in the original miniseries/book and Bowers's actions toward him are racially motivated.
>HURR DUR BLACK SPOT HASN'T HAPPENED
So? Your claim was that Derry is boring and not racist, meaning you're wrong, and we already know about the Black Spot because we're watching a prequel. (You're also ignoring Mike's treatment).
>HURR DUR IT HASN'T HAPPENED THOUGH
I could bring up it happened in 1930 in the book (i.e. one cycle before the Loser's Club in the book/miniseries) but your claim was that there's no racism in the book. This is wrong and your nonsensical shift of the goalposts, "IT NOT HAPPAN YET THO", is dumb because 1) it has been proven racism is a theme in the material and, 2) we are watching a prequel. I'll now add that we would expect it to be even more prominent as we're watching the part of the narrative where the crescendo of the the cycle is the burning of The Black Spot.

Your shit's just pure speculation.
That said, the direction they're taking with the show is retarded. It's like they're trying to build up some big mystery surrounding It but that ship's already long since been solved so for anyone who's read the books, seen the movies, or watched the miniseries, it just kind of feels like a retread. We already know It predates the universe, we know that It came from outside the Universe, we know that It resides under Derry's sewers, there's no big mystery left to solve about It so more than anything watching people bumble fuck their way around trying to find answers to shit we already know is more annoying than anything else, especially when it involves shit we already know means fuck all like the kid singing a song from some musical in the drain.
Honestly, I think they'd have been better off doing something more akin to an anthology, like have episode cover the entries from Mike's journal that elaborate on fucked up events in Derry's history like the disappearing of the original founders, the slaughter of the fugitives passing through town, or that one dude butchering a bunch of people at a bar with an axe.

NTA. I know you haven't read The Shinning because of you had you would have brought up the random multi-page digression about how King's self-insert, Jack, wrote a play about a child rapist and how out of all his characters he identifies with him the most.

>I"m not going to download the PDF and spoon-feed you.
You don't need to. I got a copy of the book and the audio book. That's how I know you're full of shit. The epilogue makes it pretty clear Danny and Wendy aren't sticking around with Dick. They crash at a cabin near the new restaurant in New England Dick started working at while Wendy recovers from her injury with plans to move to Maryland while Dick's staying in New England (and in the beginning of Dr. Sleep Wendy and Danny ultimately moved to Florida). Also in the epilogue Wendy's not in any condition to be fucking in the first place due to Jack seriously fucking her shit up at the Overlook. She's in a back brace with a shattered vertebrae and a few broken ribs.
You didn't read the book, you just read the Wikipedia page on the book. Even more, the fucking Wikipedia page doesn't mention anything about Dick and Wendy fucking so you just built up some weird head canon about that which says a lot about you, mostly that you're obsessed with white women getting fucked by black dudes.

Not that anon but...

The weaponization of Pennywise by the government thing was actually confirmed in a review, so take that as you will. Personally I don't think it's any more retarded than the later Dark Tower Somba Corp shit

I just don't understand why you feel the need to lie about reading The Shining. It's a good book and quick read. Just read it and form your own thoughts on it. I recommend Doctor Sleep as well, even though the film is superior

Post a picture of your hand holding the book with the audiobook playing in the background or fuck off.

I don't think I've ever met anyone who liked the later Dark Tower books. Shit peaked at the Wizard and the Looking Glass and went down the shitter once it started going down the shitter when it started getting meta and incorporating Stephen King himself into the story.

I actually liked Wolves of the Calla and The Dark Tower, but I've made the decision to just skip Song of Susannah every single time. In the inevitable Mike Flanagan adaptation of the Dark Tower series I hope he really cleans that shit up because whoa what a waste of a book

>The US government wants to capture Pennywise and use him as a weapon against the Soviets.

>To do this, they need to acquire the shards from the meteorite he landed on earth in, which will allow them to control him.

>In order to do this, they decide to use Leroy Hanlon, a Korean war veteran who suffered a brain injury that makes him impervious to fear.

>The Hanlon family is sent to Derry. Pennywise discovers Hanlon's mission and invulnerability and seeks to destroy him.

>Pennywise begins manipulating the town into turning against the Hanlon family. The kids try to stop him, but it culminates in a racist massacre.

>Pennywise also slaughters most of the town's population, and mind wipes the survivors into forgetting he exists, winning in the end.

Just admit you got BTFO'd hard, bro. You didn't read the book, you read the Wikipedia entry, and built up some weird head canon in your head about Wendy getting fucked by Dick. You didn't even know the characters' names. I've got the actual story on hand to prove you wrong. Anyone who's read the story knows you're wrong. Go seek help for your fucking cock addiction.

Funny thing is while a skin lamp was discovered, it was determined that it wasn't made from human skin. Shit, they couldn't even determine if it was real skin at all.

I'm leaning toward it being a test. The last thing we need is for them to be ripping off Project Bluebook's ripoff of The Americans on top of everything else.
