>BBC confirms future of Doctor Who and a new Christmas Special in 2026
https://www.bbc.com/mediacentre/2025/doctor-who-future-confirmed-new-christmas-special-2026

>Doctor Who will be back on our screens at Christmas 2026 with a special episode written by Russell T Davies.

>With Disney+ confirming they will not be partnering on the next season of the sci-fi show, the BBC remain fully committed to the show and will announce plans for the next series in due course to ensure the Doctor’s adventures continue.
There's no fucking escape from the big gay Welshman.

DOCTOR BOG CHRISTMAS SPECIAL
>>
My wife loves to watch bbc and we don't even have Disney Plus. This is really big news and we cannot wait for the next satisfying series of events on the show. TY bbc. But also fuck the BBC hard for bringing back the show like 2 years later.
>>
They won't cancel it because people like Davies and BBC execs have it in their head that if it gets cancelled then "the bigots win" so the show will just keep limping on like a dying dog

I hope the Christmas special ends with the Piper Doctor being frozen in time so the show can take another 15 year break.
>>

For me, a fan of the show, it's genuinely devastating news that its not dead
>>
>>215547108
I don't think Susan is returning, I think RTD burned his bridges with Carole Ann Ford and the mystery he had planned already got binned when Ncuti left
She seemed really pissed off with him in her recent interview

>>
>>215547221
There's no video of the full interview but here are the relevant excerpts

>“You didn’t see the episode which was to sort of introduce my coming back, where I was holding hands with a little — beautiful little tiny black child, three years old. And we were watching through the window somewhere where the audience wasn’t supposed to know where we supposed to be. And we were watching by newly-embodied grandfather, who was now Ncuti [Gatwa], and watching him have a wonderful time singing and dancing in a party in a shop opposite where we were. And obviously I, my character Susan, was longing to just go there and fling her arms around her grandfather and say, ‘Grandfather, how lovely to see you after all this time and how did you survive your floating about in space… and why have you changed?'”

>“Anyway, that was unfortunately not to be — for reasons I know and will not disclose,” Ford continued.

>>
>>215546910
That also means they have to keep doubling and tripling down on stunt casting instead of sticking to an established formula. It’s the same thing that killed Star Trek. They know what the fans want but refuse to give it to us.
>>
>>215547186
Why would you want it to die?
>>
But why isn’t Disney+ renewing their partnership? Weren’t the past two seasons a huge success? They had a gay black man as the doctor. What more could audiences want?
>>
>>215547070
The shows not going anywhere unfortunately. The BBC is totally capable of making 2-3 high quality episodes a year by themselves as shown with 14, they just needed Disney for a full season. If no other streaming service picks it up we'll probably be stuck with just a special every Christmas with the occasional 2-3 episode mini arc if we're lucky.
>>
>>215547312

Disney didn’t lift a finger to promote the show or attract new viewers. The failure of Gatwa is on them just as much as RTD.

>>215547304
You know how people say a show like The Simpsons entered a zombie era. Doctor Who is in a zombie era of zombie era. There is such a clusterfuck of issues. Even if you resolve one you have barely moved the percentage bar in just stabilising the show, let alone making it good or popular again. And beyond all that, you have in place 1) the same guy who heaped on a bunch of issues and never resolved the issues created by the previous fucktard, and 2) all the institutional retardation of the BBC. There is no reasoning to think it can get any better. It is right off. I think most fans feel just sadness at this stage rather than anger as they wrote it off long ago. It is already dead, just is corpse is being prodding.
>>
>>215547387
>Disney didn’t lift a finger to promote the show
They did a worldwide marketing campaign, viewing numbers started strong but then RTD immediately scared everyone off with his shit fauxgressive and namedrop-obsessed writing.
It's why the series bombed in Blighty as well.

Hey, remember when the first of the 60th anniversary specials had David Tennant unironically asking what an alien's pronouns were and saw the day saved by the super special power of non-binary trans magic, and people still had the gall to pretend like everything was alright and that the show had always been like this?

They didn't promote the specials much but they did in advance of Ncuti's first season, I saw they bought ads on SNL which is still one of the biggest spots for regular US TV shows, they just cut their losses quick when the viewing figures came in

>>
>Just bring David Tennant back LOL
At this point, sure. Let’s have Tennant play the character until he dies and then use AI to de-age him back to 30 so he can be the Doctor, ageless, forever.
>>
>>215547807
>Ncuti's regen into Billie barely registered compared to normies compared to when Jodie regenerated into Tennant
It was never confirmed so most people didn't even know it would happen.
>>
>>215547693
>I lied to you, because I liked it. I could pretend. Just for a bit, I could imagine the show was still alive, underneath a BBC. I'm not just a Show Runner. I'm the last of the Show Runners. The Base of Fans was wrong. There's no one else.
>There was a war. A Culture War. The last Great Culture War. My people fought a race called the Gammons, for the sake of all creation. And they lost. They lost. Everyone lost. They're all gone now. My production company, my boyfriends, even that Bluesky. Oh, you should have seen it, that old show. The second spin-off would rise in the streaming services, and the viewing figures would shine. The progressive messages in the episodes were subtle, and when the Doctor cried every Saturday, it looked like an imaginary, better version of the world summoned forth. When the credits came, the music would blow through the breeze like a novelty song.

Doctor Who has not been culturally relevant in a decade. Go to any college campus outside of Britain and ask the students if they’re familiar with the show. Odds are they’ve never heard of it. Zoomers have their own culture and Doctor Who is not part of it.

> who the hell was even asking for a ZESTY Doctor Who anyways?
RTD is the only one who wanted a flamboyantly gay Doctor. He wanted one 20 years ago but culture wasn’t there yet. So he settled for minor characters like Captain Jack. Then when culture finally caught up, he went overboard and made a homophobic caricature of what a gay Doctor would be like.

>>215548232
Doctor Who peaked in the public consciousness around 2009. It was in steady decline throughout the Smith and Capaldi eras, and then the quality fell off a cliff when Chibnall took over. RTD2 was also a disaster. They should’ve just rested it.

>>215547304
Because, if it were a horse, it would’ve been taken to the glue factory in 2017. They keep thinking of new ways to ruin it.

So a lot of people have been saying Ncuti's best stories are the Andies, that is, praising his two stories with "and" in the title, namely The Story and the Engine and Dot and Bubble. Their quality is said to tower above the rest like the Andes mountain range, hence the name "Andies" as a corruption of this spelling, conjoined to more conventional English spelling.

I do not think Gatiss is that bad. Most of his contributions are more middling or so so rather than terrible. At the very least Gatiss actually fucking likes Doctor Who. Also, Gatiss, who is gay, does not seem to buy into all the woke shit:
>The writer of Doctor Who has revealed how he protested against the “colour blind” casting of a black actor as a Victorian soldier in the BBC show.
>Mark Gatiss said he was uneasy about a “brilliant young black actor” being cast as one of the soldiers, because “there weren’t any black soldiers in Victoria’s army”.
>He put the decision down to the BBC’s drive to become “more representational and make everything less homogeneously white”.
>Gatiss described the “very difficult” email he sent to a colleague explaining his feelings on the matter. It was only after he discovered records showing that there was in fact a single black soldier in Victoria’s army, that he accepted the decision.

>It's Christmas 2026
>Russell's finally released his magnum opus
>A Christmas special reuniting Billie Piper and David Tenant on screen again after 16 years
>Russell of course doesn't recognise Billie or David's stint in Day of the Doctor as he deems all Moffat work not within his own era as non canon
>Fourteen is injured, dying of his wounds. Unable to regenerate proper thanks to the Toymaker cutting his regenerations into two and Fifteen being his own better self.
>But our lord and saviour, Rose Tyler. Using the fact Fifteen deleted himself from existence to insure a nurse was forced to raise his child, let his regeneration cycle flow into the ether. Breaking through time and space through timey wimey wibbly wobbly mavity buzzwords and jibberish, bringing forth the Bad Wolf who collected his regeneration cycle
>This allows Rose Tyler, the Bad Wolf to merge the regeneration cycle back into Fourteen, allowing Fourteen to directly regenerate into a new Fifteen, who's actually sixteen, but also David Tennant.
>Russ in all his amazing writing skills decides this is the perfect time to walk on screen and describe the the love Rose Tyler and the Doctor share and how their bond is unbreakable and how they'll spend the rest of time travelling together as they should have always done.
>He's fully aware the show will be cancelled by this act, but that's what he always wanted

Aliens of London/WW3 is everything nuWho should have been. Tightly written, all the main cast acting very well, believable and unique baddies. The tension builds up nicely in the first episode and the explosive ending is great. The scene where they're trying to work out who the Slitheen are is the best written scene in series 1. RTD also canonically kills of Tony Blair.

BW/Parting of the Ways is also very good. The Weakest Link stuff is my favourite bit, but all the worldbuilding is top tier. There's unfortunately a lot of lame plot armour where the Doctor and Rose stand around a lot not being killed by the Daleks after they'd just gone on a killing spree. And the Dalek twist being spoiled in Boom Town's next time trailer did sour me on first viewing when it aired.

Honestly I feel like the best time for Carol to come back would've been the Moffat era. Maybe during Capaldi's run, but then again the only season she might've fitted in was Capaldi's last and that season was already focused on trying to develop the Master and the Doctors relationship again

Takes a very long time to start building up and then when it does, takes literally 5 minutes just doing that and nothing else, way too long and slow, it could've all been one part.
>scene where they're trying to work out who the Slitheen are

Capaldi's the only nu-who Doctor who could make trying to explain abandoning your granddaughter in an alternate timeline and not going back to check in on her for hundreds of years not sound silly desu.
Half the reason I feel Susan was wasted on Gatwa despite all the behind the scenes mess that's clearly gone on and Carol not being happy about it.
Gatwa wasn't the type of actor who could pull the emotion you need of coming to terms with what you did and seeing someone after so long.
No one but Russell would want Gatwa walking up to a 85 year old lady and going.

RTD gets to continue write the characters he invented and feels comfortable the most writing, while also trying to write a new version of the Doctor and companions based on what he wanted to see during his original tenure but wasn't allowed to back then and companions he believes appeals to the modern generation.

Ultimately his attempts at writing a Doctor who he wanted to see in Gatwa failed and his new companions were cycled out so swiftly he's gonna fall back on a companion he's more comfortable writing in Rose Tyler because reviews of the 60th anniversary specials among fans have been less criticised compared to his season 1.

Wild Blue Yonder was honestly great, the last great episode, and I liked The Giggle somewhat. Last two series were mostly shit.
>>
>>215547534
i wouldn't even call it a zombie era. zombie eras are bland but inoffensive, this is just more Rian Johnson type stuff where they go out of their way to find socially acceptable ways to piss off the audience and generate controversy to try to advertise the show but then hide behind the social cause they use as the explanation for why they made the show worse, on purpose. it's not just lazily pumping out slop to collect a paycheck, it's actively antagonizing your audience and leaving the franchise in a worse place than when you left it for completely self serving reasons. i would take 10 seasons of zombie Who over whatever the fuck the show has been since the last Moffat season where every episode has to have some kind of social commentary jab aimed at its primary audience.

>>215547778
i would only rewatch the show again and regularly engage in the franchise financially when a showrunner explicitly retcons those elements and apologizes on behalf of the show and BBC and admits they were a mistake. start back from the 13th Doctor again or don't start back at all.

i think he'd be fine if they would just split the show runner/script supervisor roles again. let Gatiss run the show and make sure everything has the right 'texture' and find someone like Moffat to oversee the scripts - not write them himself, just make sure the writers are doing things right, understand the characters, how to avoid doing time travel poorly, that kind of thing.

i don't think Gatiss has ever been a particularly good writer and i don't think Moffat has another 5/6 whatever seasons in him, but i bet he'd be fine overseeing other writers and working with Gatiss to produce the show.

>>215549744
i think it goes back to the issue of the franchise being radioactive, there is no one with the qualifications/credits that the BBC would feel comfortable handing off the show to so they're going to have to cope with some very small name and hope for the best. letting the show go off the air would mean the chuds win after all and we can't have that, let's just triple down.

Doctor Who is a show for straight white males which exclusively attracts autists. I guarantee every poster in this thread has Asperger's at the least. As a result none of the posters have any self-awareness, social skills, or emotional intelligence, and are therefore incapable of the following:

>relating to anybody else
>understanding anybody else's point of view >accepting the existence of any opinion contrary to their own
>acknowledging any personal fault or failing >changing their minds or developing an idea in any way
>ever growing as a person

/who/ is a self-made hell for society's most worthless dregs. It needs no demons or lakes of fire because its inhabitants will forever torment each other.

With the BBC you have them: 1) giving the show barely any money, especially in an era where inflation meant they in real terms had even less to work with; 2) trying to kill it in the scheduling; and 3) forcing JNT to stay on with the threat if he resigned the show would be cancelled. With Saward the guy was an edgelord who both behind the scenes and publicly unproductively clashed with JNT. I am not saying JNT did not have problems in creative decisions but, the guy was actually pretty good in managing the behind production stuff in a difficult era and he managed to stabilise the show from the freefall that was S17. If JNT left when Davison left he would be far better remebred.

>We are delighted that RTD agreed to write us another spectacular Christmas special.
..Who else was gonna write it?
No one wants to touch the show currently until Russell concludes his fuck up
>>
Now that the show isn’t cancelled, I’m genuinely curious to see how much worse it can get from here.

The next Doctor will be trans. If the show had gone on ice for 15 years, this probably wouldn't have be the case. During the current political climate, however, it’s the only box they haven’t yet ticked.
>>
>>215551514
only if the next Master is trans because so far that's how they ease the audience into this stuff. first the Master gets a stunt casting, and then the next era the Doctor follows suit.
>>
>>215549591
Should have had him cameo in the 50th anniversary, i think most people would be fine with that being his last appearance
>>
>>215551514
there's already a tranny character
Doctor is already technically "trans" anyway by the sheer fact of being able to regenerate into a female form

>>215550168
Capaldi even seemes interested in having a Susan story, iirc the one scene where 12 looks at a picture of Susan was Capaldia input
>>
>>215551616
He wanted one but like the Peter Jackson episode it just never happened
>>
>>215551616
yeah he referenced it a bit as well, there's some video of him doing an appearance at some event for kids in character and one of the kids asks him something and he went onto this whole thing about how he left Susan behind and he'd like to reunite with her one day.

Bold choice to bring back Planet of the Incels for the 2026 Christmas Special, but I have faith in RTD making it work

I don't care if Moffat made a cringe Sherlock adaptation. He didn't make something as pointless as Bi-Regeneration because he forgot the basic premise of the show.

There’s no reason this couldn’t work so long as they didn’t 1) Make the fact she’s BLACK WOMAN the most important thing about her or her stories (I mean, how many time traveling KKK can there really be in the universe?) 2) Not focus on her sexuality (because nobody wants to imagine that naked) and ESPECIALLY not make her a lesbian
But there’s no way they wouldn’t do those things so, yeah, it can’t work.

Very good ideas from anonymous. You make a lot of good points, worth considering and making good comebacks to, which other anonymous users will be apt to do in the coming moments. Keep reading and posting!

RTD either can´t write anymore or he never could and all the magic always depended on Moffat. At any rate the show´s been dead for like a decade. Ever since Capaldi made it to Gallifrey it was never the same, in fact, even that season was quite weak and felt rushed. They could have certainly extended the return home for 10 years or so.

Some people could have probably tolerated the show becoming an aimless adventure of the week show but the writing quality really took a dive as well during Capaldi last season and specially during Jodie´s. The adventures became dull, the dialogues became preachy and lost all subtlety and cleverness... and you know, the Doctor basically does two things, he talks and he runs. If you fuck those things up you have no show.

And, as if that was not enough, they started to retcon stuff and ruin arcs for cheap gimmicks. Like they undid Donna´s "death" just to make a speech about gender identity and stuff like that which are a big no no for storytelling. The message should never take precedence over the plot.
