Europe has ancient natural features that break up "the grid" and prevent direct travel. There are no straight lines. The routes are long and circuitious, walking in Eruope is more like an adventure than a commute. Lookup the coastline paradox. Munich to Paris really is comprable to New York to Los Angels.
