Where the hell are the crops? How do inhabitants of Minas Tirith even eat? GRRM was right, Tolkien's works are very shallow. Tax policy is unironically important. Almost every powerful kingdom or people in LOTR is because once upon a time there was a king who was very good and everyone liked him, it isn't like that anymore, but maybe a good king will.. return. Meanwhile, in ASOIAF, we know why a family has power, we know where their wealth comes from. Sometimes it is literal gold mines, sometimes it is abundant crop growth, sometimes it is a convenient stronghold at important river crossings. In Essos, they have slave cities with slave economies, even the noble characters who try to abolish it wake up to the reality that things are never that simple as slaves return to their masters, unable to govern themselves at the lowest level. A very layered world.Tolkien is fine, I'll read it to my kids, but they will grow out of it.
