Watched Chungking Express and liked it a lot.More chinese kinos? Not necessarily like this.
I don't even like most martial movies but this film here is like a religious experience as to the power of cinema

>>215548223>>215548302>>215548429Looks good. Is everything good made in Hong Kong?>>215548412Watched this long ago, found it slightly boring.
>britain gives hong kong back to china>quickly stops producing kino
>>215548443Taiwan as well. For Mainland China, try Zhang Yimou
>>215548429The best film
>>215548515>>215548644Why do chink communists hate good movies? Russians still made good shit sometimes.
>>215548439>>215548412>>215548019Watched all of these back to back and they did nothing at all for me. The chinese trying to express love through art is like an autist trying to describe facial expressions
>>215548742Pic related was Mao's favourite film, Westoid
Lovers Grief Over the Yellow River (1999). Peak kino if you're a disciple of WMAF (like me)

>>215548019garbage story but god tier cinematography.
>>215548019I have tried and failed to like this film so many timesWong kar wai simply can not tell a story to save his life. All of his films feel like 90s MTV music videos stretched to feature length
>>215548515Kino worldwide has been on the declineYou're also dead wrong considering >>215548412, >>215548644, Jia Zhangke, Zhang Yimou, Wang Bing, and Tsai Ming-liang all produced kino in the early to mid aughtsChina is also probably too busy building hospitals, railways, affordable housing and healthcare right now to fund international prestige in the arts, both things the west has been failing to accomplish

About to watch this for spooptober, what am I in for?

>>215548223KINO
i like black coal thin ice and wilde goose lake
Top tier unadulterated kino:>Farewell my Concubine (it's known to be the greatest Chinese movie of all time, but for good reasons)>The Black Canon (imagine 1984, except realistic and in 1980's China. It's very political but very subtle about it, so you'll have to read between the lines a bit. It's a comedy)Top tier>The Dream Factory (feel good comedy, but also subtly political)>The Red Sorghum (war movie. Scenario is not fantastic, but it's very beautifully shot)Fun schlock tier>The Tower of the Ghostly Tribe (action movie with monsters)>Animal World (the cgi sequences alone are making it worth the watch. It also features Michael Douglas somehow)In general, the best Chinese movies and series are from the 80s-90s, because it's after Mao's era, where the country starts getting increasingly free, but before the early 2000 when the control of free speech increasingly tight. It's getting tighter and tighter now. However more recent movies, like the last two I mentioned, can be fun because they are visibly made by film nerds, who grew up loving and dreaming about Hollywood action movies and somehow got to make their own, with a ridiculously high budget.
>The Equation of Love and Death (2008)I rewatched this the other day. kino alla round
I'm downloading every single rec, these will do well with my Chinese listening practice.
>>215552353wiat youre studying chinese and you didnt know of these films?
>>215552396Only Farewell my Concubine.
the Mr Vampire movies are pretty neat
>>215548019I hate that fucking movie. I don't care about how Retardantino promoted it or any other shit, but the movie suck ass, IMHO.
>>215548412>>215548429I think OP means mainland China.
>>215552871Anything that is Mandarin or has a Mandarin dub is fine, but really just overall good Chinese movies even if they're only Cantonese are good even if only for motivation. I know most good cinema is from Hong Kong anyway.
>>215548439boring ahh mobie
>>215549121>storyWay to out yourself faggot.
>>215548439i really like romance films but this did nothing for me for some reason. i really wanted to like it too
>>215548019Wong Kar-Wei is the master of the last 5 minutes. Both In the Mood for Love and Chungking Express have awesome final scenes.
>>215548803>>215554377its an anti romance film about people coping with cheating spouses. the point is that the main characters emulate the lives of their cheating partners. not that they love each other
for me it's
Anyone got movies taking place during the 1900s recommendations? The earlier the better.
Raise the Red Lantern is pure kino. Gong Li is hot too.
that era where hollywood began cooperating with china (or at least casting a lot of chinese people and added chinese themes to movies) produced some entertaining stuff
Tiananmen Square.
>>215548019Black Coal, Thin IceBurningAfter the StormShopliftersA Taxi Driver
Probably my personal favorite, its a very strange martial arts film with lots of gore, I'd recommend going in blind. Can't say it's so bad it's good since its just good but really out there
