They should've done a mr. terrific solo movie as the follow up to superman instead. A terrific movie would've largely retained the audience from superman, since out of all the side chars he had the strongest reception, while also seeing an increase from the black boys/men demo, think along the lines of black panther marketing but to a lesser extent.

On the opposite end Supergirl will lose a non trivial amount of the audience from Superman since men & boys are less interested in female lead action/capeshit lead movies and girls have made it abundantly clear they're not all that interested in capeshit. By any metric making supergirl the second hero to get a solo in a new DC universe is just a massive financial mistake.
