So why are there no more musical geniuses like Mozart of Beethoven anymore?

I really dislike that movie because of the performance of that actor. I'm all done pretending that it's a good film. Not sure why I ever did.

Because music, like art, became something you do for money. Not something you sought to seek mastery of to show off for fellow elites. That's why the phrase "professional artist" is an oxymoron

that assumes the world still cares about composers
mozart was famous because his era valued that kind of talent

John Adams or maybe Hans Zimmer is close I think, but there just isn't the same amount of prestige in being a classical musical artist these days, even though they do the majority of heavy lifting for cinema.
I know before John Williams it felt like movie music in general was less refined in its ability to evoke a scene's emotion. Like, they were lucky if they could get the beats synchronized with what was happening.
>>
>>215550079
There are hundreds of musical geniuses, they're just not popular. Also they don't do classical music, that shit is done

Music is a form of art, and sadly, it has a permanent bond to the social circumstances of its time. We live in a shit time, so we get shit art. Also what you mention is true, profit on top of expression is never a good combo.
>>
>>215550343
>>215550365
Movie composing is something modern day composers have to fall back on because nobody pays them to write the music they actually want. John Williams said he didn't care about his film scores and it's the case for any serious musician who makes film scores. Someone like Hans Zimmer is just a merchant, he would have been someone like Offenbach 200 years ago.

i despise when people say this, "dude these swedish proodoocers are like modern day mozarts!". its probably a meme that originated from these guys themselves. top 40 popularity doesn't equal genius or talent, these "hits" are designed and not due to genius, its a multifactor scheme of industry planting based on data collection and sophisticated multi-level marketing, his association with backstreet boys should tell you all you need to know if you knew shit about modern music. they tell people what is popular before it becomes popular without their knowledge.

Why do you have to tell lies? The beloved classical masters were indistinguishable from the drug-addled philandering musicians of today. They all cheated on their wives (or in the case of Beethoven, never married but had affairs with married women). Berloiz and Chopin went on opium benders. Beethoven was violent and irritable. Mozart arguably invented the modern concept of ass-eating (Leck mich im Arsch). Tchaikovsky was a homo and killed himself by getting cholera on purpose.

It is, pretty much every known "artist" is a nepo baby. And now with AI people with skills can't make even a meager living with art anymore, so only the nepo babies will remain.

You have to have some sort of a system where 90% of art related jobs (commercial art/music/technical writing/etc.) and art-adjacent jobs (from making paint brushes to being the cable guy in a recording studio) still exist to produce proper writers, artists, musicians etc. But all those jobs are gone.

I'd also add: ease of creation brought in legions of incompetents. This is especially evident in contemporary times, when computers have erased any of the difficulty or work in creating art and AI is removing even the most basic effort required.

Composers couldn't get into music cheaply back then. Everything was expensive and required craftsmanship, from the instruments to the paper they wrote on. It was a lot of effort just to get started and they had to prove they had the talent to get patronage to begin. They had to spend hours personally researching every aspect of their music, they had to seek out instruments and sit there and listen to them and figure out how they composited together.

Since the early 20th century, classical music has lost ground to "common" types of music. This was seen as good and a way to make money. It came to be encouraged and opened the door for lots of experimentation and genres to emerge. But what exists now is the endpoint of this process where music is so debased, requiring no skill or talent, and with musicians basically becoming beggars or pornstars, that "common" music has fallen to the level it was before the jazz revolution, where a musician was like a street performer, an organ grinder, or like a medieval bard or something like that. no status at all. Which is good because from this maybe we can return to a proper "elite" form of music beginning to grow again

>>215551228
if you have ever heard a wannabe freestyle rapper practice his "freestyle" on the same beat day in and day out you start to understand this kind of music is only designed to interrupt all thought and dislodge you from any assessment going on in your mind, presumably because they know it likely to be negative towards them.

Yeezy is head and shoulders above just about anyone else in the game. Guy is clearly so smart he is nearly incomprehensible.

Compare his albums to any generic rap nigger. Composition, uniqueness, variety, lyrics, it's like comparing an adult's painting to childrens refrigerator "art". And this is coming from me, a very racist man.

Because there are not musician families with 15 children anymore, each of those drilled by their dad. Mix out of genetics and early training.

They absolutely still exist but, due to the rise of "pop" music, which targets the broadest audience possible, they inhabit relatively niche genres. I'd even argue that, with the advent of ease-of-use recording and composition software, there are more "geniuses" now than before. But, they are buried under the rubble of artists that quake the industry with illustrious mediocrity.
>>
>>215550823
math rock sucks unfortunately. your ear doesn't want to hear garbage, it wants to hear i v vi iv over and over again while a moron sings about his girlfriend. this is why smart people aren't interested in music anymore. its a solved game.

The way people learn things now is completely different to how it used to be, and it's not better. You can't sit kids in a classroom 8 hours a day reading out of textbooks, then send them home to an hour's homework and 3 hours of Fortnite, and expect them to develop into a Mozart. It's important to consistently leverage the incredible learning ability of the developing years of childhood, especially for things like music or maths or languages where there's these large underlying systems that require an intuitive awareness, but schools are too overcrowded and soulless to do it and parents from boomers on down refuse to engage with their children and get them involved in the collaborative learning they need. Boomers didn't teach millenials, Gen X didn't teach zoomers, millenials didn't teach gen alpha, completely abdicating their own responsibility to raise their child and letting the school system and video games take over and assuming it would all just work out.

Mozart's father was a music teacher. Beethoven's father was a music teacher. Salieri's older brother was a music teacher. The early years exposure is crucial. The juvenile brain has an incredible ability to deep-learn, and we waste it training them to write in cursive and read Cat In The Hat, because that's what the system decided was a good use of their time.

Mozart was made a celebrity by his father early in his life. He'd tour and everything.
So by the time he grew up he was already a star.
His adult life as known composer was just living what had already been established earlier.

Even the movie shows that, you guys didn't watch it?

It's not how good you are, is: "can you market yourself as a good musician?"
And marketing and sales means money. To think that you can market yourself without a budget out of nowhere is naive and stupid.
