Their primary goal was always to adapt the Red Wedding. After that things didn't matter too much. Realistically the Red Wedding probably happens halfway through the show, while in the books its probably occurs in the first 4th of the story. They had no interest in having the show run 10 seasons, and ASOIAF had ballooned in scope and even GRRM had no idea where the characters were headed. I don't blame them for cutting things down. What they ended up giving us was garbage, I'll blame them for that. But in theory cutting down the final books could have worked, D&D just aren't great TV writers.
