Ligotti certainly does an excellent job of "getting underneath" the physical realm but he doesn't shy away from it. You're trying to tell me stories like "Purity," "The Red Tower" and "Teatro Grottesco" don't go into the "physical realm"? And as for Lovecraft, he's certainly more explicit in his visions than Ligotti is but I wouldn't necessarily call his work uncouth except in the most gratuitous and self indulgent instances (and even then, they often make for great stories regardless).
