Are you supposed to root for Borden in the end? Obviously he's not portrayed as flawless, but the ending comes off as triumphant in his favor, when I don't think it's deserved. He believes human value is derived from their ability to withhold and deceive. While Angier claims in his final moments to deceive in order to make people wonder if there's more to the world than one would initially think. In the end, Borden drives his wife to suicide and regains custody of his daughter with the help of Cutter who also seems to not have any ethical issues with this trick. And even though his daughter seemed to know what he was doing, she must not know of her mom's suicide as you'd think she would resent her father for that.
>>215554522No, you're supposed to reflect on the ending and think for yourself whether anyone in the story deserves being "rooted" for
magicians are huge nerds
>>215554522Angier’s final words feel like a weak attempt to balance the scale, when in fact the latter half of the film is absolutely Borden-pilled and Angier goes full on supervillain. Borden is fully committed to his craft, to his own detriment and the detriment of those around him, but he’s still a loving person and it’s nothing compared to Angier’s crimes, crimes born of pure, seething bitterness. The biggest flaw in the film is that when Borden’s wife finds out his secret she opts to commit suicide, despite having a young daughter, instead of just demanding that Borden change his ways, or just working according to his wacky switching schedule. You love a man, you have a child with him, just be with the man you love and stop giving a fuck about the other one.
why are you guys talking about Borden like he's one character. there's a good Borden and a bad Borden. when he tells Angier he genuinely doesn't know which knot he tied it's because he doesn't -- that's good Borden and bad Borden was the one who tied the knot and ambiguously killed Angier's wife on purpose. bad Borden is the reason for the suicide of good Borden's wife. and so on.
>>215554607>flaw in the filmtheater types just be like that, if they weren't so dedicated to keeping the act super duper secret theres no way any of them would be together.
>>215554658Dang I never thought about it like that. Thanks anon.
>>215554658Yeah, I don’t know why we’re trying to protect spoilers from such an old film. But it’s not like Borden has an evil twin. One seems like slightly more of a dick, but he isn’t malicious. He tied the knot because he, and angiers’ wife, wanted to push the envelope and improve. He wasn’t trying to kill her. He also just wasn’t in love with the wife and wanted to be with someone he did love. >>215554661Was Borden’s wife even a theater person? She was understandably distraught because half the time her husband doesn’t love her and is obviously cheating on her. The truth of the situation completely resolves both of those problems.

>>215554522>root forAre you american or a teenager?
>>215554564
>>215554522>mommy! help! i can't process a drama about two men's egos without a movie telling me who is the definitive good guyHow are too dumb for Nolan?
>>215554744>The truth of the situation completely resolves both of those problems.Share 1 single secret with one single woman and it would be a short 15 min film
>>215554522>the ending comes off as triumphant in his favorWhat? One twin is dead, and the one that is left is the one who never wanted to be married or have kids.
>>215554564I get that, but I didn't get that impression when he's reunited with his daughter who happy to see him, as well as Cutter. It felt jarring tonally, as if the filmmakers failed to acknowledge how morbid the trick was.I'm not saying I'm looking for someone to root for. It feels like the directors take a side with the ending, although I will concede, I only watched it once atp.>>215554607I don't think that's fair to his wife. Much like the audience, she has to wonder how long the trick has been going on, and whether her first and most special moments with him were real or part of the grand deception. She also has to grapple with the fact that she would have to live this lie and be a part of his act for the rest of her life or get between him and his dream. Two scenes flash before her death; their first meeting and the dinner where she likely figured out the trick. She dies in a room of bird cages, reminding her of the start of their relationship, a time before she became an unwilling participant in the act.
>>215555487It was never shared, she just figured it out. But I feel like her actions don’t make sense once she did. >>215555787She has just cause to be extremely upset with both Bordens, but I still feel like her reaction doesn’t make sense. Leave if you must, but why kill yourself?
>>215554522This movie is peak kino when if you maintain a good level of drunkenness for the whole runtime.
>>215555705>kills his evil archenemy >other brother tells him to go and finally live his own life >gets his daughter back >the remaining one actually is the one who loved the wife and daughter
