MTV went to shit in the late 90s when boy bands and pop stars took over it.

The Real World was the death of MTV. This is an indisputable fact.

They didn’t kill MTV. MTV killed itself with an outdated entertainment model. YouTube already made it obsolete 20 years ago because now you could get any music video on demand but TV was still superior due to slow connection speeds at the time and much higher quality on cable. Nowadays people watch YouTube on their TVs. But the difference is more than that. Music videos used to be these major products that artists made that put them into the spotlight. Teenagers could not afford buying records in large quantities and discovering new stuff was only possible on TV or radio. That also changed eventually when Lastfm came around. Now as internet slowly but surely improved and media files got bigger and better with less lossy compressions music video broadcasting lost all relevance. Zoomers just don’t have access to the medium that MTV made itself popular with. Television is dead and it’s a good thing. Giving more control to the consumer is a victory for everyone except useless middlemen and gatekeepers.
>>
>>215556650
To be fair, it is their best show.
>>215556813
As a millennial I remember clearly watching trl every day before middle school. I'd watch it in the bath tub as I was getting ready.
>>
>>215560228

>>
>>215560228
except we’ll never have professional quality entertainment ever again because that requires a considerable (and risky) investment but the profits aren’t there to justify them. no more good tv shows or movies will be created. it’s just books and music again.
>>
>>215559316

MTV was dead before zoomers were even born
>>
This was my shit growing up. I don’t understand why they canceled it, it’s a show that could’ve gone on forever, like South Park and SNL.
>>
MTV died because it pivoted to reality tv, which worked at first, but we live in the internet and streaming age now. You can get online drama from youtube and twitch and tik tok and twitter. And you can get music from there too.

>>
>MTV stopped playing music videos. Failed.
>VH1 stopped playing vids. Failed.
>CMT stopped playing vids. Failed.
>Fuse stopped playing vids. Failed.

I'm sensing a common factor here. But music videos also kind of rand their course by the mid-00s so I think it would have happened either way. It was a precursor to Hollywood, really. Music vids got so bloated and repetitive everyone lost all interest.
>>
>>215556574
No he's saying "you happy zoomers"
>>
>>215560631
It might have been just for a season or two but I was really surprised the amount of horrible political humor they regularly do. It ages so poorly.
>>
I'm approaching middle age and people have been bitching about MTV playing not-music since before I was born. This is some old fucking discourse.

Anyways their original programming and reality shit was actually extremely popular all the way into the early 2010s even though I never watched it. Their key demographic (young adults) being the first group to stop buying cable is what killed them.

you forget that it was also a place to discover new music and be exposed to stuff thats outside your bubble
nowadays your youtube/spotify algorithm will just keep recommending you things that sound the same or artists in the same genre
theres still no place to go to that actually has "music-journalism" so to speak as mtv had, at least in equal quality
the first time i saw anime that wasnt specifically made for children was mtv (and since then anime has regressed and seems to be 95% 12yo girls in skimpy outfits doing dumb shit)
