Is it worth a watch? I remember back in fifth or sixth grade when everyone around me and the media could not shut up about how great it was
>>
Decide for yourself, faggot.
>>
>>215561520
No
>>
>>215561520
Zhang Ziyi is the gentleman's waifu.
>>
>>215561520
I STILL do not understand the ending. Yeah I know it's related to the story told earlier, but it doesn't make any sense to me
>>
>>215561602
I just thought she killed herself for completely fucking up everyone's lives
>>
>>215561520
it's baby's first wuxia film, decent but mothing compared to such masterpieces as A Touch of Zen or Five Elements Ninjas
>>
>>215561520
Dunno, but the porn parody is fucking amazing.
>>
>>215561520
It's a classic Wuxia film, so pretty gud.
I still don't get it why everyone jerked that movies dick specifically. I watched a ton of Wuxia movies and they are on par quality wise with Ang Lees film.
There is nothing about it that stands out, including the acting performances.
>>
i remember being shocked how much screentime the women got, its basically a female power fantasy. that said the monk dude's scenes are excellent
>>
>>215561520
It's ok. Hulk is his best film.
>>
>>215561727
That's also age old tradition in Kung Fu movies, so not even that is a stand out feature of the film.
I guess the whole "the actual weapon is of no importance, the skill is more important" thing is kind of a standout, but then again, there are tons of kung fu movies where the protagonist fights with sticks and defeats the villain who swings two swords at once.
>>
>>215561727
strong women have been in wuxia since the sixties, before that even
>>
>>215561520
its kino
>>
>>215561520
I really like this movie. It's super solid and holds up really well. But my favorite kung fu movie is the 36th Chamber of Shaolin
>>
>>215561520
If nothing else, the music is very comfy
>>
>>215561795
Lau-Kar Leung made a bunch of great movies, but his best is Eight Diagram Pole Fighter
>>
>>215561821
I haven't seen that one, I'll have to check it out
>>
>>215561520
>hasn’t seen one of the top 10 films of all time.
Stop what you are doing, take off work tomorrow, turn your phone off and lock it in a drawer, and watch this on the biggest screen you have.
fucking plebs
>>
>>215561602
>didt understand the ending
What would you feel like if you didn’t have breakfast this morning?
Fucking idiot.
>>
>>215561520
Yeah, it's great. It meanders a little in the back half but it's great.
>>
>>215561520
It's fucking awesome, watched it the other day.
2000s really was the peak Wuxia era before every Chinese actor started getting bogged into oblivion and they all started to get aimed at women audiences.
Zhang Yimou is one of the greatest directors alive today yet is being wasted on shitty TV C-Dramas.
>>
>>215561602
In her shot for freedom she literally fucks up everything and destroys everyones lives, so she "commits suicide" with the ending ambiguous because the legend is that if heaven wills it, she will survive and be granted freedom and can live with her bf.
>>
>>215562470
>Asian actors getting bogged
This is a thing? I thought they age nowhere near as poorly as westerners
>>
Star Wars really needs to hire Wuxia directors because every time I watch Hero or Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon or Shadow etc I can easily see it being a Star Wars movie (cultivation, swordplay, magic force powers, yin and yang/shadow and light).
Get Ang Lee, Zhang Yimou, John Woo and give them the entire Old Republic era.
>>
It's up there along american beauty and avatar in the category of films people wouldn't fucking stop talking about worldwide but fizzled into irrelevance in one and a half years time, still haven't seen it because of how enmeshed in popular culture it was I feel like I ve watched it
>>
>>215561772
Never been the main character
>>
>>215562504
To oblivion, the obnoxious chin fillers is basically standard now (see from any side shot they have a giant golf ball under their chin), all male actors are bogged to fuck, all older female actors are more bogged than western ones and younger actresses now all have their jaws shaved down to oblivion.
https://www.reddit.com/r/CDrama/ just look at any of the trailers here.
>>
>>215561520
Yeah sure but there's better wuxia out there, with more action and less fluff
>>
>>215561520
Never liked it that much.
CYF is great, but the rest really isn't
>>
Take down notes and remember that their is two different plot lines flowing throughout.
>>
>>215561520
that lee moo bye goy got proper fucked over in this flick innit
>>
>>215561724
It was praised because it was the first "mainstream" HK wuxia flick to be promoted heavily in the West. This came out soon after The Matrix and the West was enamoured with wire fu and curious of its original influence from HK wuxia flicks. It simply came out at the right time. I also believe both movies heavily influenced the later Marvel movies fight scenes.

for me it's Iron Monke
>>
I do think its good but for me the best is Kung FU Hustle
>>
>>215564618
I'm a Shaolin Soccer man myself
>>
>>215564618
I already hear the music of the intro scene of the village.
>>
>>215564983
Its good but Kung FU Hustle had everything even the subtle love story. Who comes up with a character like Fong, a mute ice cream vendor that loves because of one act of kindness? For me not just the best kung fu movie but one of my top ten of any era or language offering or genre
>>
>>215561650
>masterpieces as A Touch of Zen
I have no idea why this one is so praised. In wuxia from that era I mainly look for over the top action, but in this one it's pretty sporadic and down to earth. But it's not particularly thought provoking either, the story is nothing to write home about.
>>
>>215561520
It's pretty good.
>>
>>215565134
Guess it's time to pull up the opening with the axe gang on youtube again
>>
>>215561520
It has some of the greatest fight scenes ever recorded on film.
>>
It’s not bad. But it is definitely made for the 2000s western prestige crowd. Just watch it, it’s better than anything made for streaming. There are at least 3 really good fight scenes, 4 if you count the chase as a fight. Probably the my only complaint is that master li mu bai is a really boring character. But all the women and the bandit kinda make up for it. But if you’re use to Jackie Chan or even Bruce Lee you’re in for something real slow.
I would also suggest watching web of death. It’s much lower budget and like 30 years older. But the melodrama is actually fun and they’re more creative with the sets and special effects.
I would also suggest demon of the lute. It goes full fantasy with elves and birdmen and kids getting in on the fights.
>>
>>215562583
That is so incorrect. Maybe you got bored and stopped reading the subtitles or fast forwarded to the fight scenes. But to an almost ridiculous degree so many early wuxia movies are about a female swordsman who is dressed as a man.
Cheng Pei-pei who plays the jade fox in this movie was a huge star in early Shaw brothers kung fu
>>
>>215563537
make sketches of the character's faces next to their names in your notes to keep track of them
>>
>>215561602
She takes accountability.
>>
>>215564618
For me? It’s Invincible Armor
>>
>>215561520
You, like no joke, no irony, wouldn't get it.
>>
>>215561520
feminist tripe (which is where the oscar comes from), decent visuals. watched in the theatre, people were laughing at the ridiculous, silly, poorly executed wirework.

Hero (2002) mogs it in literally ever aspect and much more deserving of oscars. Crickets tho.
>>
>>215562327
That's a test if he could engage in a hypothetical.

You are the faggot.
>>
>>215564364
literally iconic
>>
>>215561520
Yeah its okay
>>
>>215568139
No one cared about hero because it’s just propaganda
