The greatness of Starship Troopers is that it's enjoyable on multiple levels
>kickass sci-fi action movie

at the end of the movie they're shown to be recruiting children to fight the bugs. the mixed race, mixed gendered troopers from 3rd world countries are like the volksturm defending Berlin while the red army are like 20km away

How the fuck are bugs supposed to grow to that size? Have you ever seen a bug that size? How are bugs supposed to shoot down spaceships orbiting the planet they're on? That would never happen. How do bugs kills people with guns? Lmao, have you seen a bug?
>>

You sound bigoted, Anon. You don't know anything about bug psychology, intellect, the capacity of their hiveminds.
>>
>>215576692
NTA but it is kind of weird how in the movie everyone's scoffing at the idea of an intelligent bug at the midpoint, but the bugs can apparently throw rocks across the galaxy much faster than the speed of light, meaning they're clearly a starfaring race
But if you look at the ending scene, the new recruits do in fact look to be about 13, aka casualties are so bad they're drafting kids while promising new wunderwaffen to defeat the enemy. The end scene is basically what German war propaganda in 1945 looked like and it's not an accident Verhoeven made it that way
>>

They had an intra-galactic empire that humans called the Arachnid Quarantine Zone and invaded human controlled worlds such as Zegema Beach.

>none of their society's issues
What issues were there? Rico's parents weren't citizens yet seemed wealthy so obviously even a non citizen was treated well.
>>
>>215574508
the reason fascism is alluring is because it works very well for the in-group. and people very easily imagine themselves as part of the in-group. when people watch SST, they don't imagine themselves as the shlub being gored on an alien planet by a bug, or the non-citizen starving to die outside of society. they think they're the psychic, or the pilot, or the gigachad hero

the brilliance of fascism is it allows suckers to believe they'll be winners -- until the out-group expands to include them

Probably has something to do with Dutch society and culture being so different from America (I'm Dutch just like Verhoeven)

listening to the commentary, you realize that whatever theme Verhoeven was going far is kind of scatterbrained. The closest coherent one he mentions is that war turns people into Fascist out of necessity and he mentions how not only Nazi Germany, but ancient Rome, the US, the USSR, and China are all at this stage.

He also seems to not treat the movie nearly as serious as internet fans of the movie do, like a lot of it is just them having fun and being silly. Like how people compare the symbolism in the movie to Nazi symbols, but the guy in charge of all of that says that he based the design of the eagle/war plane flag on pacific north west native american art and simply because he thought it looked cool

>>
>>215577413
>Verhoeven said the meteor attack is real, but the humans provoked the bugs
Verhoeven didn't write the script, I believe it is very much an intentional implication. Or just something that only really happened in the fake propaganda movie version of the film's world, but didn't happen in the implied "real world" that is making this propaganda movie. I think this is one of those things like the protag in Night Of The Living Dead getting George Floyded at the end, even if some people involved said it wasn't intended to mean anything (which I highly doubt anyway in both cases) it still ends up having a lot of meaning.
>I mean he wasn't subtle in dressing them all in SS uniforms
Like I said, I was 14. I'm talking more about American style hyper-patriotic military porn being a lot less appealing to a Dutch audience compared to an American audience.
>>
>>215577513
>but the guy in charge of all of that says that he based the design of the eagle/war plane flag on pacific north west native american art and simply because he thought it looked cool
Weird cuz V said he deliberately wanted something just as close to a Nazi flag as he thought he could get away with, and got roasted by the studio when they saw it, but by then they'd already filmed too much of the camp scenes to reshoot
>The closest coherent one he mentions is that war turns people into Fascist out of necessity and he mentions how not only Nazi Germany, but ancient Rome, the US, the USSR, and China are all at this stage.
Yeah, I think "fascist" is being used as lefty catchall for "bad!!"
The war makes everyone and everything worse. Everyone who believes in anything, like Dizzy with love or the teacher with the collective good, dies a horrible death, and the only people who thrive are the grinning idiot, the selfish bitch, and the sociopath monster

Such a great movie
>>
>>215577638
>Verhoeven didn't write the script
No, but it was the same writer-director-producer trifecta that had done Robocop. They all worked together. Verhoeven was the only choice for director because they all understood each other.
>I'm talking more about American style hyper-patriotic military porn being a lot less appealing to a Dutch audience compared to an American audience.
It's a parody of WW2 hyper-patriotic military porn, American but especially German
The ending scene shows that they're drafting children while promising new wunderwaffen, it's pure 1945
>>
>>215577513
Movie watchers tend to take movies much more seriously than the people making them. Or at least they take them much more literally, and look for very overt symbolysm and allegories, when directors are usually way more artistic and free in how they approach movies. Basically I'm saying that Redditors don't grasp art. Just see them talk about David Lynch if you have a laugh, they have a post on the Twin Peaks subs like once every week at least where somebody comes with some lame ass theory that it was all a dream.

the reason socialism is alluring is because it works very well for the in-group. and people very easily imagine themselves as part of the in-group. when people watch ‘Enemy at the Gates’, they don't imagine themselves as some ryadovoy conscript being shot from behind by a ‘blocking detachment’, or the starving holodomori left to die outside of society. They think they'll be a Pavlichenko, a Kalashnikov or a Zhukov, a ‘hero of the Soviet union’.

The brilliance of socialism is that it tells losers that nothing is their own fault and leads them to believe they'll be winners come the revolution- until the out-group expands to include them, and they end up shot in the back of the head by someone like Blokhin and buried in a Polish forest.

Fascism(National Socialism/Nazis). The in-group is a citizen of that nation. The out-group is those that threaten the citizens wellfare IE bankers, landlords, merchants, gypsies etc

Socialism. The in-group is the oligarchy. The out-group are the useful idiots that were part of revolution and are a threat to the oligarchy when they learn they were duped.

Every single socialist revolution kills off the high ranking useful idiots because they don't know anything else but revolution so they need to be put down. Just look at feminism, they got the right to vote and work , but they keep fighting for more shit they don't need or even deserve because they're taught to always keep fighting.

I've been shat on for this, but my theory is that the bugs in the movie universe are used as livestock by the Federation. They're used as a propaganda piece to keep humanity united, and to cull the excess human population. Traitor to Mars heavily implies this.

Bugs are to a degree sentient and sapient, they're a hive mind directed by a hyper-intelligent brain bug. They colonised multiple planets, which is shown in the movie (Klendathu, P, the Mormon world) and book, and that requires FTL. They also were able to target ships in orbit from the ground with plasma-based projectiles.

Both the Federation and Bugs in the movie are capable of interstellar travel and colonisation. In fact, it's said in the book (I don't recall if the movie does too explicitly) that the reason the war started was because a bunch of Mormons ignored Federation guidance, colonised one of the bug worlds, and got aggressive with them. The bugs retaliated by attacking the species, rather than just those humans, because they see humanity as a single unified species just like they are a single unified species.

It showcases that courage and heroicism exists regardless of whether or not the war is just. It shows that sometimes being a warrior is a reward in and of itself. 'Ours is not to question why, ours is but to do and die'. This message resounded with me because as a teenager and young adult I did not care who we were fighting or why, I just wanted to wear helmets and kneepads and shoot people on the other team which exactly why I enlisted in the Army during the surge. I did not care at all about the reasons I just wanted to have the experience of being in a squad and seeing explosions and gunfire and stuff. I felt very cool and like whenever I was getting shot at I would literally think about how I wish my friends could see me in that moment lol. There is merit to just being able to fight and kill as part of a big army. It just feels right, like a key human experience.

>>215576793
I think at the end of it all, it's not a very well written movie.
And that's because it's cobbled together from pieces of the original book, which Verhoeven did not read or comprehend.
In the book, the answer to "are the bugs intelligent?" isn't up for question. They're established as a highly technological species with a Borg like hivemind. The individual bugs are drones, but they're still collectively intelligent.

Yes, verhoeven is a dumb hack that just puts tits and ultraviolence onto already good scripts for his every successful film and is genuinely too stupid to understand that making a product with wide market appeal to sell well is mutually exclusive with making a successful satire.
His attempts at satire were so fucking unclear that all the initial critics thought he was actually pro fascism because that is how the movie is directed to be. Its taken all this time for the discussion surrounding the film to warp like it has.
He's also just too stupid in general to figure out how to make plot points work sensibly. He never even once conceived that Buenos Aires could and should be a false flag for his story and says as much in the commentary track that it was explicitly the bugs but is too stupid to realize that playing galactic billiards with a meteor straight into the densely populated city pocket is stupid. The film only works as a big, dumb action film but its great at doing that so it survives to inspire dumb libshits to whine about how people are misinterpreting it like its actually smart enough to have something to say.
