Part of the reason Sopranos does well is its believability and realism in dialog and depictions. I've noticed (especially in the last 15 years) that there are so many weird and sickly freaks just wandering around the US now, especially in rustbelt areas like NY, NJ, PA, etc..

This scene is from 2007 just when the US was starting to get weird. I think David Chase is something of a prophet, watch the pilot where Tony talks about how in 1998 he's afraid the good times are over and nothing is left now.
