It definitely holds up.
I watched it for the first time a few years ago and expected it to be fairly mediocre and only propped up by Brandon Lee's death as it's "legacy," but no. It's great.
Reading about City of Angels and how it could've been good, but was ruined by reshoots and editing is unfortunate.

>>
>>215622834
There's two, but three if you want to split hairs.
There's the final film, which was ruined by studio execs who just wanted a glorified retelling of the original with "new" characters.
There's the original screenplay that had the blessings of the original The Crow author James O'Barr. It was filmed, but big man Harvey Weinstein didn't like that it wasn't just a lame retelling of the original, so reshoots were done and ruined it.
And there's the novelization of the screenplay, which is pretty much the best version.
>>
Everything about it was just delicious. Every single frame was just dripping with atmosphere. Its cinematography, its set design, its atmosphere. And the humor throughout kept you from taking it so seriously despite the plot and universe. Its no wonder every goth kid who watched this movie immediately downloaded it as their new personality; its just that good of a film. Man, what a loss.

>It was filmed, but big man Harvey Weinstein didn't like that it wasn't just a lame retelling of the original, so reshoots were done and ruined it.
According to Pope, the Weinsteins ordered drastic reediting to match the structure of the original film.[26] After Pope returned to the UK, he was contacted by the Weinsteins who had constructed a "director's cut", with which he was not involved, and Pope refused to see it or contribute to any commentary on the home media releases.[26] Pope's experience making The Crow: City of Angels was unpleasant enough that Pope avoided returning to feature films for over two decades.[27]

I always liked Crow 2. It has the Deftones playing a good b-side in it as the live band of the movie. Will look for original screenplay/novelization. Heard there was a hard to find TV version of Crow 2 that had more scenes than the "directors cut" but sounds like there was way more that got cut.
>>
>>215622936
>There's the original screenplay that had the blessings of the original The Crow author James O'Barr.
O'Barr was given the first attempt at writing the sequel. O'Barr developed a close relationship with Lee during the making of The Crow and wanted to move a follow-up film in an entirely different direction. Titled The Crow: The Bride, O'Barr's pitch saw a woman resurrected after being killed on her wedding day.[12] When presented to Miramax, studio executives rejected O'Barr's story; claiming "no one is going to see an action movie with a female lead."
Goyer had known Lee personally and expressed hesitance to signing on, agreeing only under the condition that the protagonist be played by a woman. His pitch partially took place in Victorian-era England and featured a rebirthed Jack the Ripper as the antagonist.[15] Goyer's treatment was approved by Miramax and then promptly scrapped in favor of a film led by "a guy who looks like Brandon Lee."[16] Nevertheless, Goyer remained attached, instead devising a new story which would bring back Sarah Mohr and center on a father avenging the death of his son.

I watched a workprint version a couple of years ago. I think the final theatrical release is the best version for sure, much better pacing than the workprint, but the longer fight scene with the mob should've stayed in, a lot more gore, he actually uses the katana, it was great.

it was michael masse (one of the rapists actors) who fired the shot, i think the intro scene
they shot the whole movie first before the flashback intro (which is a bit odd, so they had 99% of the movie shot)
imagine if they shot it on chrono order and he died on day 1 with only the intro partly shot

>>
>>215626498
No, it's the scene where they shoot kill the pair in an apartment. This is the reason why it's done in such choppy, psychedelic manner.
>>
>>215626682
Around 15 minutes compared to theatrical. Most cut content was removed with good reason imo, they just extended a lot of scenes that didn't need to be. Again, except for the mob fight scene which I thought it should've been left intact.

The Crow 4: Lazarus

>main idea was, it's lame to redo The Crow as low budget without Brandon Lee and part of the brand was directors like Proyas being music video directors and goth as the music subculture, so after two failed sequels, if we have to keep churning these out then let's take that music/revenge concept and apply it to hip-hop with ideas like Tupac and Suge Knight, record labels and gang wars
>was supposed to star DMX as this version of The Crow, a Tupic/Biggie archetype, betrayed by his Puff Daddy/Suge Knight "best friend" and business partner
>Eminem was interested to play the judas villain (whole character is basically shitting on Diddy but would have been different if cast with Eminem)
>main twist would be, both die in a shootout together, their blood merge somehow and they both get a crow but Eminem gets revived whereas DMX comes back a year later, when he comes back, Eminem has fully climbed to the top as a powerful star/CEO, has manipulated the public and banked on DMX's death etc. And he has the same crow powers so DMX can't kill him
>DMX has a black crow, Eminem has a white crow
>main influence was De Palma's Phantom Of The Paradise, with a lot of satire on music industry
>was to be directed by Joseph Kahn (lots of music videos, Wu Tang etc, then Torque), wanted to go full comics/cartoon with over-the-top stylish set pieces (if you've seen Torque then... yeah)
>knew they'd piss off goth fans but at least decided to go all in in this full retard comic book direction
>Weinstein pulled out of the deal because they only saw Crow as straight-to-video and didn't believe a movie with two rappers could make money (that was before 8 Mile)

I've always heard about the Crow. Cawwing in the background as if it were some hidden underground sleeper hit. It was always in the realm of darkman, the shadow, zoro, purple zoro to me. Just some 90's stuff that got left behind. So I decided to get into the franchise a month or so ago and watch the version that came out last year since there's no way I'm going to watch a 30+ year old movie.

I thought it was absolute ass. This is your favorite thing? He's the "crow" for less than half the film. It feels like a boring romcom without any jokes.

Zombie was set to make his directorial debut with the film The Crow: 2037, and even wrote the film's script.[70] The film was set to take place in the future, though it was never released.[71][72] It was decided that the film was not suited for the franchise, but would instead serve as a standalone project.
