If they didn't use it in the real world it would have been perfectly fine. You could maybe have a subtle implication that it's not undercooked CGI it's that the grid can't make a perfect clone of a real person. It'd be neat contrast with the quest for the perfect system when Clu himself is imperfect. They get to do their tech demo thing and acknowledge how it is at the same time. But they didn't do that so it's just undercooked CGI that's solely there as a tech demo.

The problem is that "twist" is completely inconsequential and doesn't require the audience being fooled for the scene to work, so they made the movie worse for no good reason.
