The point is contrast. A colourful exaggerated clown is committing horrible acts. The recent pennywise is in this new tradtion of 'creepy old fashions'. The problem with Tim Currys version is that because it is a tv adaption, they couldnt go full tilt with mutilations and bring that contrast fully to light visually. He just gurns a bit. That being said, i was more bored of the modern jump scares in the new versions.
