Can we finally act like adults and admit these movies weren't that great?
>>215654620How exactly do you define "great"? They're fun and entertaining and competently made, especially for the time' so what more do you want?
>>215654620go away rlm
>>215654620Star Wars and Empire are objectively great movies. Neck yourself.
They weren't great. They're amazing. Fantastic.
>>215654720The writing isn't particularly interesting.>>215654815Empire, yeah, but Star Wars is a bit shallow.
>>215654862>Empire, yeah, but Star Wars is a bit shallow.classic midwit>muh dark
>>215654906No, I just think the fantastical elements in Empire are better and make the world feel larger. Star Wars all in all feels like a pretty small movie in a pretty small world.
>>215654620No. It will be like this for the next 2000 years.
>>215654620great poster
>>215654620OT Star Wars is and will always be excellent.
>>215654620George probably only intended it to be a campy and fun sci fi opera that you shouldn't take so seriously. It's so full of inconsistencies that any mature adult should recognize that. The fact that it's grown into this behemoth consumerist franchise with a fan wiki longer than the Bible and so many reddit simps on the internet defending it with their lives is truly sad.
>>215655572that's all it was, and then he was bullied by hollywood for making such a sincere movie, which led him to completely rewrite the premise and retcon it in Empire.
>>215654992>>215654862Well you have to remember, part of the appeal of these movies was the incredible special effects. Nowadays they seem a little less special, but I would say they're fun and memorable adventure films still. As for Star Wars specifically, I'd say it has one of the best action climaxes ever.>the Death Star is closing in on Yavin>the engagements begin with the Rebel ships dogfighting with the TIE Fighters>That one guy makes his initial failed Trench Run>Darth Vader himself comes out in his special TIE to stop the Rebels>Luke makes his trench run as all his buddies are getting killed around him>Luke's old buddy Biggs is killed>Vader closes in on Luke, ready to make the kill>Suddenly Han returns, completing his character arc and defeating Vader!>the Death Star prepares to destroy Yavin>but Luke finally uses the force and destroys the Death Star, succeeding where the previous guy failed, and saves the day! There's a lot of story in the big climax to Star Wars. It's like a How-To guide on creating a great battle scene.Additionally, I think Luke, Han, Leia, Chewie, and the Droids make a great cast of good guys, and Vader is an absolutely iconic villain.
>>215656232I'm not saying it's not a good film, and I definately agree on the cast (though the people that die besides Luke are all really forgettable, but that's not much of an issue, they are only there to die).I just think it's a bit small. It is well-plotted, I think. But, in OP's words, it is "not that great".
>>215656232The concept of the trench run was always retarded. If the exhaust port is on a single point on the death star, why not just fly at it directly and shoot everything at it? Why take a winding route guarded by fuckloads of turrets while sending one pilot at a time?
I dont feel like watching the CGI ones again. I'll admit that much.
>>215654620TrueThey are amazing!
>>215656624especially because Empire retcons the little rebel fighter planes to be able to use warp speed so Luke can go to yoda planet. If they can use warp speed that could easily get behind the death star to directly approach its anus.
>>215657281Star Wars space battles not consisting of FTL ballistic missiles from across the galaxy is something I always wondered about. Then again, I'm not a Star Wars fan, and chances are there is some silly explanation for this in some novel no one ever read.
>>215654620A New Hope is legitimately one of the best paced films ever made, right up there with Casablanca. ESB is overrated because "muh sad dark night of the soul" but it gets boring in chunks and ends on a cliffhanger making it incomplete by design. Only the first one works as a complete film.
It wasn't a great movie but it was a great time to be a filmmaker. George pitched 'Buck Rogers and samurai tv shows have a baby' and not only got money to do it but basically created ILM to build his miniature toy space ships. The talent behind this movie and many other movies in the 70s-80s was incredible and I don't think even they realized how good things were. Now you have a boardroom and a pajeet cgi slop factory making movies.
>>215655572>George probably only intended it to be a campy and fun sci fi opera that you shouldn't take so seriously. He quite literally stated in the first interviews at the time that it's an Errol Flynn type adventure movie for 12 year old boys because those weren't made anymore. And it's excellent at that.
>>215654620>star wars>not that greatReally? I think they're pretty good for children's movies.
The biggest tragedy of Star Wars is that it took away George Lucas who made THX 1138 and American Graffiti. He ended up spending the rest of his life making mediocre Hollywood substitute toy commercials slop for children. What a waste of talent.
>>215657499I forgot to mention how good Jim Henson and his people were too for SW. Makeup, costumes, all that stuff was on point. The reason the Cantina scene is so iconic was because of how much work went into what is ultimately one minute of screentime to show you how alien this world really was. We had mostly only seen humans and robots up to this point.
>>215654620Original movie still has one of the greatest climaxes of all time.
