It's a genuine character study. You're never quite certain whether Tylor is a genius or a fool, or maybe a genius by accident, or maybe a fool that the universe itself wants to succeed. I would dare say that there is nothing wrong with the show. It's basically as good as an anime can get. There are no major flaws at all, it's very entertaining, there's good characterization, and the vibe of the show is very wholesome. I recommend it to everyone, but because it's an older show, nobody ever takes me up on the recommendation and watches it.

When I got into it in the mid-90s the Sci Fi Channel was showing stuff like Galaxy Express 999, Armitage III, Iria: Zeiram the Animation, Dominion Tank Police, Project A-Ko, Vampire Hunter D, etc. If they were big enough to make it on a mainstream cable channel, I'd assume they were decently popular overall.There was other stuff around I picked up at the local video store like Bubblegum Crisis, and the Dirty Pair and Urusei Yatsura movies, but I can't say how popular those were in the US as a whole.
