it's over
October was a bust at the box office as big-budget tentpoles and awards contenders like Disney’s “Tron: Ares” and Dwayne Johnson’s “The Smashing Machine” struggled to sell tickets.Overall revenues for the month were tragic with $425 million across all titles, the worst collective haul since October 1997 — when psychological thriller “Kiss the Girls,” slasher “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and supernatural mind-bender “The Devil’s Advocate” were the top-grossing titles — with $385 million, not adjusted for inflation.(!) Sci-fi sequel “Tron: Ares” ($126 million globally against a $180 million budget) and A24’s “Smashing Machine” ($19 million against a $50 million budget) were particularly expensive for their respective studios to produce and resulted in tens of millions of dollars in theatrical losses. But movies of all sizes and genres, including the family adventure “Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie” ($68 million), Channing Tatum-led dramedy “Roofman” ($27 million), Aziz Ansari’s fantastical comedy “Good Fortune” ($14 million) and Neon’s supernatural thriller “Shelby Oaks” ($3.2 million), struggled to appeal to their target audiences.“The major releases this month failed to deliver. Simple as that,” says box office analyst Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations. He also believes that Hollywood under-delivered on scary movies during the spookiest month of the year.https://variety.com/2025/film/box-office/october-box-office-record-low-ticket-sales-smashing-machine-tron-ares-flop-1236567987/

The whole “theaters take half” is bullshit. Studios get up to 70-90% opening weekend. Movies now are entirely frontlines making most their money within the first three weeks. Add on so many new releases that take away theaters each week from said movie, just nothing in it for studios to keep a movie in theaters for months

>>215680350They're turning October into a second Dump Month as opposed to a Genre month because Zoomers and Zillennials are more inclined to Horror during all seasons. The last couple years there have been a lot of think pieces in culture magazines and blogs about the rise of Horror's Legitimacy, it's box office strength and the depth of some deeper horror movies. This has led studios to move horror into the more profitable months instead of just going "people wanna see the Halloween movies near halloween!" So they release their big ones in the blockbuster months as opposed to holding them for Spooky Season. Instead they can release a few of their movies that weren't gonna make a lot of money anyways, especially the ones that are more Oscar-baity (One Battle After Another is gonna get a lot of noms and Tron: Ares while complete shit is gonna get a lot of Technical Noms, Smashing Machine is the Rock's Academy Invite) but none of those movies were ever gonna be billion dollar blockbusters, Tron has always failed, PTA is a Kino Director not a Blockbuster Guy, The Smashing Machine was not a traditional Dwayne Johnson movie for the Dwayne Johnson crowd. But they need to be in theatres close enough to Oscar Season for the Academy Voters to remember them. So that the beer-gutted Special Effects guys in LA and New York go "Oh yeah, the New Tron, yeah that really looked awesome, way better looking movie than Superman" and all his peers can go "Yeah I know what I said about the Rock Movies, but Dwayne, I remember I met him once when I was doing a WWE Commercial and he's really a nice guy, that Smashing Machine performance, how can anyone say that wasn't perfect"

>>215675806New movies have no pull. After nearly a century of gimmicks, technicolor, widescreen, surround sound (lest we forget the multiple failed attempts to make 3D a thing). Hollywood is officially out of ways to trick people into going to the theater for movies everyone knows will be on streaming two months later. The only theaters that are doing well are repetoire theaters. Because of nostalgia I guess. People like seeing movies they love on the big screen. But new movies? Nobody cares anymore. I guess you have the blockbusters. Christopher Nolan, Dune, but I think even there the audience has shifted to home viewing.

I’ve said in a previous post, Hollywood is dead because social media killed movie stars. Stars sold movies. Got some unknown movie with no built in audience? Put Tom Cruise in it or Will Smith or Bruce Willis etc. Because stars can’t sell movies, studios now rely on big IPs to sell it. Why everything is a remake, capeshit movie or big IP movie like Barbie
>>215681412Disney sent Tron: Ares out to die precisely because they wanted to bury the franchise forever. Now they have an excuse to never touch the Tron IP again. There has never been a Tron product that was a financial success.
>>215675806>three decade lowThe mid 90s did not have particularly bad movies. It's economic.1995 was a few years after a global recession. So is 2025.
>>2156816222025 is just the middle of this not-quite-recession of penny pinching and pocket squeezing amongst the traditional Middle Class. AI has led to a sort of economic stagnation that mostly hit middle class jobs, professions like Journalism, Banking, Tech and Entertainment have largely narrowed and slimmed down. A lot of the kids who went to college are stuck sort of middling, their incomes are stagnated. These are the people who watch a lot of the movies that were heavy-hitters this month. Everyone who likes A24 and Paul Thomas Anderson is in those worlds. Most Tron fans fall into that category. And that's the group of people who have been hit most hard by the last 5 or so years of consolidation, slimming down for profitability and AI. That's why you see this mix of love and hostility to AI in Middle Class places. One Battle After Another failed because there are a bunch of college educated 30 somethings who are stuck with hours that won't let them go on a date in a job that makes them feel like they're not datable.
>>215681622>>215681732all of that can be true, but there was no dip after the 2008 financial crisis
>>215681575Pure idiot logic. Disney lost 132 million on Tron bombing. If they didn’t want Tron they wouldn’t have made it. There was zero demand for Tron. They put it out in October so wouldn’t have competition.
People can't afford to see movies in this Trumpconomy.
>>215681545So start casting streamers. Put Destiny or Hasan as your lead man.
>>2156817922008 wasn't even bad. I graduated into it and it didn't affect me at all. I think it was hard to find jobs for like 6 months and then everything went back to normal. Our baseline economic expectations today, when we are supposedly not in a recession, are way lower than they were after 2008 which we were told was as bad as the great depression. Yet, back then, people could rent a 1BR in the city on minimum wage. They could open a mortgage in a nice suburb with 2 median salaries. A highschooler could buy a used car with half of his summer job's earnings. All of that was already disappearing before the pandemic, and 2020 just put the final nail in the coffin.
Generation X is 60 years old and Millennials are aging out. Theaters are a 20th century pastime that Z-A don't know or care about
I'm not interested in watching films about figures who lived in obscurity. I never heard of this fighter. Why should his exploits get a second jab at glory through The Rock and why would I care if it wasn't that exciting enough the first time around?>N-no wait it's my life.....through the lens of an actor!I don't care. We shouldn't celebrate men and women spending time away from their children so they can play pretend professionally.

>>215675806The vaxx-dieoff
All these copes. The products Hollywood is churning out suck, plain and simple. The entire business has been hollowed out and is utterly devoid of talent and creativity.
>>215681995I was walking past AMC the other night and they were doing a K-Pop Demon Hunters Sing-Along, and frankly that's probably the future of theaters. Jessica Tisch's grandad blew up all the old Lowes theaters that had one or two screens playing one or two movies in a beautiful Art Deco ornate experience environment because the Multiplexes were mogging them economically, now only a few small towns and some LA and NYC neighborhoods really have 2 screen theaters. And that's why she has job security.Watching a movie live in theater has been changing, frankly during that decline you see in the mid-10s I was already using movie theaters as a dark space to do semi-public sex acts that get Colorado Republicans in Trouble. The successful theater today is one that knows how to appeal to these Events type things, the Taylor Swift One Night Only events, the Sing Along to the KPop Demon Hunters, the traditional Rocky Horror/Room type theater experiences.
>>215682158You’re an idiot. Not even up to dispute theater attends been on a decline even before Covid. Covid accelerated it by 15 years. Everything is going steaming. >>215682383How do you know if shit is “flopping”on streaming? Del Taco’s Frankenstein is going to be massive when it hits Netflix this weekend.
>>215682807Probably how many of the swinging streamers (the ones who go month to month with different streamers) swing to Netflix because the Frank Stein movie and how that benefits Netflix economically. That's kind of what I assume. There will be people who just stay subscribed to a streamer no matter what, there are people who only subscribe to 2-3 streamers at once and if they say switch to HBO Max for the Chair Company and I Love LA, then Warner sees I Love LA and the Chair Company as that successful, if Netflix adds Frankenstein by Del Toro and a bunch of people switch to Netflix for the month, then it was successful.Doesn't matter if you watched a few classic episodes Mr Show and finally watched And Just Like That... what matters is that for a couple months you gave HBO Max money to watch the Chair Company or I Love LA.

>>215684102damn, you're right. i never looked at it like this before. selling stuff by mail actually allows you to sell everything. renting from a store means limited selection because of limited physical space and streaming means limited selection because of IPmail>streaming>store
>>215676617The problem is that in movies, he's never late 90s/early 00s Rock, which is when he had aura. He's always mid-00s Rock, who's not quite intense enough to be the next Arnold or Sylvester. But late 90s Rock might have always been doomed to crumble, because at his core, he's a politician. Sylvester has no problem playing a gritty hardass with masculine values because he is one. Arnold is an autist, so he naturally comes across as unusual. Even when he was at his peak in wrestling, people who didn't like The Rock were noting that he was a one-trick pony who just spouted the same catchphrases again and again. As opposed to Austin (another person who's pretty close to how he acts in front of the camera), who could keep producing new trash talk all day.I guess that the lesson here is that you need a straight-talking tough guy to play your straight-talking tough guy.
>>215675806The big difference here is that in the 90s, they'd have hot and cold periods. That's perfectly natural in any market. And they had the adaptability to get through the cold periods. Now it's just down, down, down, and the decline is caused by extreme internal rot. Sometimes they have a lucky streak but those are extreme outliers. The Igers and Kennedys didn't have the foresight to use a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with infinite money from investors and a massive new market filled with curious, excited prospective customers (China) to solidify their juggernaut status for the next twenty years (the alleged business experts were too stupid to even understand why they were seeing record profits), and they definitely don't have the wisdom and expertise needed to save themselves from the consequences of their stupidity and hubris.
>>215676018>seth rogen>aziz ansariyeah that's a double eww no fucking thanks

>>215694295they actually bought original scripts from new writers in the 90s. execs actually read scripts and took calculated gambles on cool ideas. now they just throw hundreds of millions at talentless DEI hacks to shove their retarded ideology into franchise IP.
The movie would have been great if they casted anyone but the Rock. The storyline was good
>>215684317cope and seethe
>>215695547Casted is not a word.
>>215695483Have you seen the new batch of actors? That's explains why all the old farts

>>215677800Terrifier 1 has the feel of an actual fucked up nightmare, 2 and 3 both felt like a comedy slasher. Basically the same thing they did with Nightmare on Elm Street
>>215680700>>215680763>>215682321That budget weeb cope is full of shit. The anime industry is outright notorious for biohazard-level working conditions that make the American film industry's working conditions look dignified by comparison. One of the reasons why Disney's animated films tend to cost a lot is because they're animated in California AND employees/animators are actually paid well. MAPPA, the studio behind Chainsaw Man, is (or at least was) actually one of the worst offenders of abusing their animators. Ufotable, is also pretty shitty too. A former animator called them out a few years ago for refusing her maternity leave, and even rejected her compromise of working from home. Chainsaw Man isn't really benefiting all that much from the success of Demon Slayer and even Demon Slayer's success is still mostly coming from East Asia while in the West, it had a sharper decline than other Hollywood blockbusters that came out this year. Also, I don't think you can actors if they want more payment when they return to a role that became highly successful for them. Japanese studios are infamous for royally screwing over their actors. Disney voice actors are actually paid well for their labors while Japanese voice actors are literally paid McDonald's tier salary. That's kind of why Japanese voice actors does a lot of side hustling on the side like having a YouTube channel, a music career and radio podcast on the side. They don't actually make money from voice acting.
>>215696152It's probably hard for him to grow out the hair if they ever ask for more John Wick shit. So he just keeps it all the time. Plus he's old and successful and doesn't have to change. The studios probably ask him to keep the look too because that's how zoomers recognize him.
