This encapsulates the boomer mindset. In their minds, as long as they committed to their base duties everything else is justified. You can be an unwarranted egotistical prick but, because you provide for your family, you're a great parent.

>does the bare minimum
>WORLDS BEST DAD
>>
>>215693579
>>does the bare minimum

Working 9-5, or maybe even 7-8, how's that the bare minimum? Not to mention the odd chore around the house like fixing something that neither the wife or kid know how to.

>>WORLDS BEST DAD

I don't think that's what they're going for.
>>
>>215693083
I still think it's Great Depression generational trauma. A father who could put food on the table and keep the house from falling apart was the pinnacle of masculinity for a good decade, and it permanently altered the psyche of everyone who was touched by it or the people who suffered through it. You don't really see this in other countries because of how economic depression manifested entirely differently.
>>
>>215693539
except that wasn't the case at all.
My Dad had a decent paying job and would skimp on everything possible and resented having to spend any money on us at all. He would only have us over one night a week, despite the fact he literally did nothing all other nights of the week and had no friends. When we were over he had virtually zero interest in us.
The only time he'd feign interest was when his parents came over and he'd act like he really liked us. I also found out later on that he lied to his parents about why he wasn't more involved in our lives. Saying it was my mother who kept us from him. When I literally witnessed him saying multiple times as a kid saying he wouldn't have us more than one night a week.
Dude was just a deadbeat piece of shit
>>
>>215693083
This is 100x better than millenial parenting
>>
>>215693628
There are bad dads, yes, but some dads actively fought with themselves. They wanted to slack off at work or quit their job. They wanted to do a bunch of things but didn't just to keep the family fed.
>>
>>215693665
No it isn't
>>
>>215693683
This was the issue you sacrificied a part of the family for what?

The illusion of a provider on a gibs economy, your boss and trust me on this, will always say and it will be true, that he got the job because he had a family
>>
>>215693619
nah, boomer dad mindset is quite universal, although my dad for one was not guilty of that, although my wife's dad still is.
>>
>>215693539

>>
>>215693726
I literally never said any dad was perfect -- but a lot of them do a job they don't want to when they would rather be hiding in a hole and drinking a cold beer.

>>
>>215691601

>>
>>215694443
That is literally the base requirement for being a parent. Failing to meet that standard is definition of bad parenting.
>>
>>215691601
he sounds like a dad who wanted to run away but didn't
>>
>>215694960
You don't understand the scene, do you? The point is that the son is asking him something insultingly outrageous, insinuating that he doesn't love his son everyday and wants the best for him.
He is answering in a way that the son will remember decades from now, long after his father is gone, and appreciates it even more with wisdom and experience that comes with age.
>>
>>215695024
In the play the father is abhorrent, he actively sabotages the son out of spite for his own failure.
>>
>>215694944
No, the base requirement for being a parent is giving birth to a child or two or more. Doing nothing more than providing food and shelter is good because it teaches them independence from early on.
>>
>>215693755
Great parenting goes beyond just providing. Intellectually lazy parents love to congratulate themselves for doing the bare minimum. Then they act surprised when their kids resent them for condemning them to a mediocre life.
>>
>>215695067
It’s called nuance esl. Not everyone is perfect. In fact they are far from it. Like how you still live with your mom at your age.
>>
Why even have kids if you aren't gonna like them
>>
>>215693083
Unironically yes. When a parent busts their ass so you can have it easy they deserve to be a prick. They've got all the bullshit on their back while you're riding high. Once they're gone and you've got to do it all yourself you realize how good they made it for you. You suddenly realize how unappreciative your ass really was. You wish you could have thanked them more, and now you cant
>>
>doing the bare minimum of a father is "good parenting" to /tv/
who would have guessed the lonely young misanthropes of this board would have a warped perception of fatherhood? really makes you think...
>>
>>215695068
We can argue semantics and definitions all day but if "giving birth to a child or two" is all you do as parent then you're a terrible parent. I wouldn't address you as parent because that would imply a modicum of respect.

People in the comments of this vid were all like "omg tough love wholesome" but that's really not the impression I got from this monologue, the boy is scared shitless. Amazing acting by both by the way.
>>
>>215703753
It is most certainly not "tough love", Troy is a horrible person in Fences and not any kind of role model. Even when devoid of context and only watching the scene in isolation, he's unnecessarily harsh and and intimidating in the scene, blunting any kind of life lesson he might he trying to impart, and equating fear with respect.

Even though my dad bullied and molested me for years, I still have a huge desire for paternal approval, often to my detriment. Why is the father wound so profound?

None that I've seen.
I assume it's unique to the minority of law abiding blacks in the ghettos. A mixture of the culture that promotes respect killings and disdain for that very same culture that causes one to make an honest living.
So a fiercely hardened demeanor along with a total lack of rationality.

It's not necessarily a bad thing, just unpleasant.

There should be levels of competency for everything. That's how we evolve society. But it'll never happen. In order to drive, something that affects people's lives that aren't your own, you need to take a written and behind-the-wheel test. In order to vote, something that affects people's lives that aren't your own, you don't need to take a test. You just show up. In order to have children, something that affects people's lives, you just get your nut off in some woman.

Needs to be a test and registry for people who can vote, have children, etc. You cannot have children if you aren't above 105iq. Boom. Saved the future from taking care of a bunch of homeless people and drug addicts and prisoners.
>>
>>215706775
>>I assume it's unique to the minority of law abiding blacks
Most certainly not. It's more of a boomer thing, especially from military families but exported out to certain "types" of father.
>>
>>215701454
I wish I had a real relationship with my father.
I don't want to blogpost but essentially he hated his job and was always irritable (not in an abusive way) because of it so that made me not want to be around him as a kid in order not to not set him off. It was like that most of my life with him. Never really knew how to approach him about anything.
He died of cancer when I was 21 and I've only come to realize these last few years that I never really actually got to know the real him as a person, he was just "my dad," if that makes any sense.
>>
>>215706681

Not him, but the kids who grew up during the great depression were the ones who birthed the boomers. Pretty sure it would impact your parenting style/perceptions of fatherhood. My dad was a good man but fucked everything up by gambling. I'm going to try not make that mistake with my kid, actually be around for them, fuck working 'hard' to buy a little motorized jeep for their birthday like i got and a bitch wife (my mother) wanting to move all the time for trivial reasons, i'd trade 100 expensive toys like that for more time with my dad.

this is what bothers me most about boomers. It's not the decadence or consumption as much as it is the extreme level of self importance. Every boomer in my family acts as if they are the most important person in the world and everyone is thinking about them 24/7. they insert themselves in situations they weren't invited into and voice their opinions when nobody asked because they can't conceive that there are situations in life where they aren't the centrepiece.

I know that feel
I could never open up to my father or be honest with him for the exact same reason. I think it's a big part of why I dont like sharing about myself as an adult. It didnt help that he was a drunk. He died when I was 22 and I went through the same realization. A child should never fear his father.

I think it's because having your father's love and warmth, when men are usually not like that at all and in fact usually have to be the opposite of that in order to provide for the family, is a big deal. It means that you're important enough to warrant those things from him. With women, especially moms, their warmth and love and tenderness is a given. A maternal figure will always be there to dot on you no matter if you're a little faggot. Getting that from a man, your father, means you're special. You're not like everyone else - you're HIS child. He loves you and wants to be near you, to spend time with you. You're not some annoying burden. He will protect and cherish you.

If you don't get that from your dad, you inherently start to believe you are not special and perhaps not even worthy of warmth and love and care and closeness, and / or that you're annoying and not interesting.

Does that sound right?
