I just rewatched it. It's been 6 years since it came out. It really is a crappy melodrama dressed up as some supposedly "dark and gritty" 1970's-style character study when it's heavy-handed and contrived and lacking any actual depth. Things just happen to this guy and he has little to no agency, which might be the point, but was portrayed through nonsensical storylines involving the Wayne family and his "mother" which were, again, melodramatic and asinine. The class war element was stitched on to court controversy in the modern political forum but it's not at all supposed to be anything substantial.It's clear that this character, whoever he is, not supposed to be The Joker. Little over, if you're going to make a character study about a lonely, disregarded and alienated young man, don't cast a 44-year-old former indie sex symbol who's never ever struggled in any way since you can sense in his performance that he's a fraud. All in all, a very crappy movie that is truly "McDonald's arthouse". It's not a deep, artistic film. It's a DC Comics movie. That's all it'll ever be. End of story.I'm glad the sequel had him raped and killed because this guy isn't The Joker and I never related to some spineless twig who'd be as debased as to fantasize about some single mother negress instead of a cute, young blonde he spotted in the street. I'd give it a 4/10. It's a stupid, juvenile rip-off of The King of Comedy using a comics and cartoons IP as a skinsuit.

I'd read the general consensus which is that it was bad, yet I went in with an open mind.Holy shit nothing could've prepared me for just how bad this shit was.
