It was the caliber of the performance from the actors themselves that made the characters interesting. It was Rush and Nighy hamming it the fuck up and Johnny Depp doing his best Keith Richards impression and freaking out the studio heads with how many fake teeth he wanted is what made the characters interesting, along with the setting that gave them that freedom.
