I thought it was a decent premise but Vince has done nothing with it for 2 episodes.
After the first episode I thought it would just cut to Rhea Seahorn's character reluctantly navigating a utopia esque world but they're really leaning into the "hive mind is bad" sort of thing, which is retarded. It's not well thought out.
This really reminds me of David Chase vs Vince Gilligan. Chase is a legit 150 IQ genius and Vince is a 119 IQ "gifted kid".
Western writers believe that you inherently need a large, well-defined conflict to write a story, which has to do with the western mindset. Eastern writers can write stuff like slice of life, episodic, and pastoral type narratives (think of K-On, Cowboy Bebop, etc.)
This show feels like Last Man on Earth which had an OK premise that the writers obviously ran out of ideas and abandoned for a sort of mid comedy drama a few episodes in.
The dialogue is also really mid, Vince and his team obviously have trouble writing for surreal situations, he seems like he does not have the unworldyness and mental instability that you need to write decent sci-fi/paranormal fiction. You need to be sort of deranged to be able to walk the line between grounded drama and fantasy to write decent magical realism like Twink Peaks or Evangelion.
I always see like Vince Gilligan and David Chase as sort of connected; they both created these extremely popular prestige TV shows (breaking bad and the sopranos) about a criminal antihero/villain, except one is sort of pulpy pseudo-capeshit schlock that happens to have a lot of high moments, and the other is a surreal psychological thriller with characters who feel like they're actually real.
Better Call Saul seemed like it was approaching Chase's ouevre but the show had really reached its natural conclusion before they could do anything really exceptional with it and they were obviously limited by the aging actors and setting in the Breaking Bad universe.

While watching only one thing made me really think of AI, but it was more AGI, and that's them creating the virus in a lab based on instructions they don't fully understand, which is a subtle way an AGI could take over. Those doomsday scenarios involve more death than mind control though.
