I don't think I agree with the image, and funny enough Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are great examples of not fitting into that binary. They generally try to be realistic within the rules they confine, but they sacrificed logic many times in order for characters to get the fate they deserve, or to make a moment cooler.

It doesn't make much logical sense for only half of Gus Fring's face to be blown off, but it elevated the scene, so they added it in. The best stories are generally ones with amazing world building, but aren't afraid to stretch things within reason.

I'm not sure that it'd be physically possible for someone to be able to retain that much information. The hive mind probably works like a PC, where it has to reach into a specific hard drive for information, with each person acting as both as a processor and hard drive.

To expand and rephrase, I think the way it'd most realistically make sense is that each "person" is psychically linked. The virus both gives this psychic connection, and overrides default behaviors. The hive mind can access each person for both thinking and for the memories they retain. When they want to know something that the person doesn't inherently know, or needs more processing power to think, they psychically ask others in the hive mind for help.

If it did work like this, that would technically mean that if you bombard it with enough questions you can overwhelm it to the point it'd take time to respond to all of them, but I don't know how realistic that is if every person in the world is a processor. It'd be interesting to see if there was any way to interrupt the psychic connection and see how one of them acts in isolation.

A point against this theory is how easily Carol can shut down the whole hive by just being negative. If it did work like I described, you think she's only take out a few people, and not literally everyone on the planet. If the virus is being sneaky, it could have only shut down the people that the other uninfected were interacting with, but it doesn't seem like the show is going in that direction.
