unique is too arbitrary IMO. it's not like historians find some random no-name empire to crown as the greatest of all time or philosophers pretend like Kant and Hegel aren't the high point of German Idealism or readers don't acknowledge the supremacy of Shakespeare and instead demand that you read only Robert Greene
top-tier kino is just that regardless of popularity

Any kind of similarity that comes to mind, really. Weir said the rhythm of the film, editing, pace and so on were influenced by euro art films, but I suspect there’s more. Antonioni’s L’Avventura for instance has a vaguely similar plot and setup, and has been compared to it, so I’ll probably start there. I imagine there are films that Weir might have used as visual references, just like he adopted a kind of pre-Raphelite aesthetic for some of the characters

what up dingo nation! got a review of that overrated stinker "One Battle After Another" for ya! Drop that like button and ring that follow button for more!

>Bloated crime drama. Leo is unconvincing as a whiny pothead loser, Sean Penn puts on a silly voice. There's probably a good 1hr 30min movie buried in here that focuses on one or two characters-the final car chase is unique, the scene where they run across rooftops, the riot scene, all good. The trouble is the action is never truly spectacular-it just feels like 20 iterations on your standard midbudget indie action setpiece that anyone worth their salt could shoot- there's no beautifully blocked out action sequence that you might see in Death Sentence. Felt deeply personal at times, in a bad way-I simply don't care about PTA's relationship with his mixed-race daughter. Also some bizarre pretentious choices in terms of lighting-I have no idea why every single domestic (or is it place of safety?) scene is yellow and I don't care-there didn't seem to be any payoff for this where there was a domestic scene that wasn't yellow. I have actually managed to talk myself down from a 3 star rating for this. It's impressive, purely by virtue of the budget, but it's not good and not a good demonstration of PTA's talents, or lack therof. This strangely reminded me of 13 Hours-a third the budget, far more spectacular, far better demonstration of Michael Bay's talents as an action filmmaker. Stick to Adam Sandler buying pudding cups or Daniel Day Lewis delivering monologues about milkshakes my man, an action auteur you are not.

>The equivalent for France would be what, Demy's Donkey Skin?
No wonder you actually think Japan can compete with France, you're a fucking retard. I'll say it again, Japan does not make the top 10 while US and France are miles ahead of number 3.

Not a strong criticism when the man is a kino machine that has only made kino up until now. A semi-kino is still a kino.

Why is Billy Wilder considered classic/arthouse when he just made genre slop? Literally comedies about crossdressers. Sunset Blvd maybe has a bit of a point to it but even there it's very thin.

I won't watch OBAA or any more PTA films because though they are technically good, I know now for certain that he is ethically compromised and warped in his ideas. He revels in the pathology of damaged characters, and not in a cautionary tale kind of way, he tries to normalise it. Busting nuts into the ugliest woman on the face of the earth is not the behaviour of one whose mind I want to explore.
