>>215941683
Por moi the holy, unassailable great works are Tenebre, Opera, Crystal Plumage and Suspiria. Phenomena is carried by JCon’s cuteness, I didn’t really like Deep Red when first I saw it so I will need to see again, and Inferno bored me but I love the deep blueness of it in comparison to Suspiria’s redness.
>>
>>215944820
That film came out last year, dummy.
>>
>>215944820
Agreed. Black Phone 2 was weird. Like it was womanized. The sister replaced the brother, another case of a male protagonist being replaced by a woman. She drove the whole plot and did everything. Nobody died that wasn't already dead before the movie started. Bizarrely fetishized Mexicans and Mexican culture the whole movie.
>>
Is it worth seeing Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein at the theater or would I be as well off on my iPad?
>>
>>215945683

If you are bugged by obvious cgi extensions then maybe not. It was shot in scotland so there is some nice photography but i moreso remember the colour tinkering and scale problems. The movie is overwrought and visually excessive. It looks like Crimson Peak so if you like that you will like this. My major problem was the script which hampers itself by trying to make the monster too sympathetic and victor too maniacal.

I find it very midwit to oxymoronically equate vindictive murderous revenge with "moral complexity". del Toro's creature has plenty of complexity in the anguish of his alienation, learning of his perverse creation, denial of a companion and animosity to Victor "the miracle is not that I should speak but that you would ever LISTEN"
>>
>>215948957
The 2017 one with the deer thing? Yeah I thought it was lame despite a good opening.

>>215950018
to out people that were raped such as yourself.
>>
>>215950063

I disagree. Its very one sided in the monsters favour. Thats why the redemption at the end doesnt work. Victor doesnt have a moment of lairty, he just gives up and the monster has no crimes to make up for. He walks into the sunset at the end like a chick in a romantic comedy. Complexity is interplay between characters. Without the deaths of Victors loved ones at the monsters hands, he has no real reason to seek his destruction in the way he does. Depending on your interpretation, the monster is a part of himself he denies and tries to destroy. He has only himself to destroy in this version as the monster is basically a background character in his life.
>>
To the anon in the last thread who answered my question about a movie (turned out to be Don't Look Up), thanks!
>>
>>215950495
like I said total midwit, you're so close but just foreclose any depth because you're fixated on shit like 'Victor you're the monster'
>Without the deaths of Victors loved ones at the monsters hands, he has no real reason to seek his destruction in the way he does. Depending on your interpretation, the monster is a part of himself he denies and tries to destroy. He has only himself to destroy in this version as the monster is basically a background character in his life.

like how can you say this and not recognize how the creature is an avatar for all of Victor's failures that he cannot accept due to his vainglorious narcissism and lack of his own mother's love as a child. The creature is his failure as a lover with how Elizabeth fawns over it instead of him, his professional failure as a scientist which doubles with his failure as a son to his father- being his son, it is everything he hates about himself but he refuses to accept it as his son until hearing the creature's personal account. In the reconciliation he finally does so and asks for forgiveness, the creature acquiesces in a moment of grace telling him 'perhaps now we can both be human', he has transcended his fallen state (Paradise Lost motif), found his humanity and will to live despite his tragic circumstances (Prometheus connection), the warm sun on his face delivering him unto salvation. It is complex and beautiful

The creature for himself is not the pure of heart angel people want to reduce him too, he struggles with great anguish to understand his being, he indulges in rage murdering many even after being educated in right and wrong from the bible by the Elder and "self-defense" doesn't negate that on it's face let alone when he knows he's immortal which adds a unique wrinkle to this adaptation of his plight and fate.
>>
>>215950495
and Elizabeth and William both are killed yes? Whether by the creature indirectly or Victor's hand doesn't matter, they are one in the same as his creation and refusal to take responsibility and accounting of his mistakes. He must forgive the creature it's trespass for his failure to do so
>>
>>215950495
>Depending on your interpretation, the monster is a part of himself he denies and tries to destroy. He has only himself to destroy in this version as the monster is basically a background character in his life.
baffling dissonance in your head canon
>>
>>215950729
yeah and there's another layer of complexity there with God and his son Christ/man with del Toro's own father and lapsed Catholicism
>>
its just a movie nigga
>>
>>215950729
>failure as a lover with how Elizabeth fawns over it instead of him

For what reason should she fawn over the monster? Purity in death? Its fetishism. Toro has fetishized the monster at the expense of his creator. Victors failure is mute as the only reason he has to account for them is because he has been beaten down in pursuit. I see no internal struggle in this because the shadow of the monster should have been chasing him before he chase it. I understand the motifs and the religious iconography that Del Toro flirts with. The monster being 'christ' like and rescuing a man from a fallen state. I just dont think it works in this case. Victor has not been set free as he has not fully dealt with his fallen state. The third act is hampered by narrative changes which impact the relationship between the two parties. The monster takes full account of himself by the end of the book because he understands his endeavours have been in vain. This monster kills 2 dozen men and walks into the sunset a free man. Simply because Del Toro has a hard on for the outcast. Its shallow and does take the heights you imply.
>>
>>215950770
>He must forgive the creature it's trespass for his failure to do so

Where is the internal struggle and his memories plaguing him? Where is the realisation that should come before a sick man just gives up and gives into shadow?

I'm going to have to side more with the other anon just because I think Del Toro's version is too crude in some ways and too subtle in others.
Victor is too much of an asshole on a brute personal level (shooting Elizabeth, just being a dick in general) overshadowing the larger questions of morality. I mean, the monster can regenerate flesh and seems immortal, that's a pandoras box Del Toro just throws in there but it gums up the works regarding man and death. It's perhaps the first film where Victor is morally correct to experiment, given the film pushes us to consider all those wounded soldiers on the battlefield.
The creatures development is too jumpy. Elizabeth instantly falls for a ghastly corpse freak. He gains literacy and emotional depth instantly (in terms of scenes) by reading books. He acts like a doe eyed fawn to the farmers, then brutally slaughters one without any sign of processing what he's doing other than being a monster-man trope.
I just didn't buy it, and more struggling as the other anon said is at least one way to inject more into the character.

I have no idea what people are calling this film "Meat Kills". First off that doesn't make sense. And the translation in the subtitles says "Meat Day" as well.
>>
>>215950908
>For what reason should she fawn over the monster? Purity in death?
del Toro suffuses their relationship with erotic subtext but thematically it's very clear with the captured butterfly motif, her speech about choice as the seat of the soul and her essentially arranged marriage that she sees a kindred spirit in the creature - loving all God's creatures great and small (bugs). She gives not just love but recognition of his humanity and why she dies saying better to perish with your eyes gazing upon me reciprocating that recognition of her own captivity.
agree to disagree on the rest, the creature recounts his tale forcing Victor to recognize and acknowledge him realizing the error of his ways. The softened heart being a condensed story beat doesn't make it less true. The creature also saves all the sailors freeing the boat but still has to endure the bittersweet tragedy of immortal alienation, yes it's a change from the book but it is fitting and moving
>>
>>215951357

The capture of the butterfly has always been a sign of the fatality of beauty and errant desire. I think it should have been a 3 part series to achieve a more satisfying story cap. It would have still had narrative problem but perhaps I would have forgiven them a little more. I dont mind different takes, i just dont think the whole movie comes together and the character storylines kind of fizzle rather than pop.
>>
>>215951093
>He acts like a doe eyed fawn to the farmers, then brutally slaughters one without any sign of processing what he's doing other than being a monster-man trope.
well consider that he just dealt with the wolves who had previously acknowledged killing without hatred as is their nature but is now presented with humans killing out of fear and prejudice, a great injustice in his understanding that reflects Victor's disposition and so he indulges in rage and continues to do so until his own humanity is acknowledged by his creator is he able to find grace and forgiveness freeing him from hatred.

I will concede with you and >>215951417 that while it certainly worked and was moving to me that there is a considerable number of people for who it did not and so it is fair to fault the film's execution. I'd agree the script could be improved or expanded for the story it wants to tell. I just disagree with a lot of mischaracterization and understandings floating around or lazy arbitrary critiques and it's not 1:1 with the book shit.

>>
>>215951606
Something I do agree on though is that I thought the ending hit it's stride and both the emotional and philosophical elements were threaded together well. Which is interesting because it was going off-script from the book. The magic of film is if you nail a films ending (which should be the thematic summary of the journey), it becomes a lot easier to absorb it and remember it fondly.
>>
>>215951619
I wonder if they let her smoke real weed on set.
>>
>>215951606
like I just vehemently reject that premeditated child murder is essential to the character and story or the extent of the novel's brilliance. It seems people really don't understand the critique being made of Victor or the anguish of the creature without it but I ask again how is it morally ambiguous or complex to pursue premeditated malicious revenge? It functions in arousing horror and as a representative manifestation of Victor's horrific action but the core of the creature's plight and pathos to me is still his alienation by perverse horrific birth and circumstance which this film still champions

Only thing that pissed me off was the ring/crown thing not doing anything in the final battle idk. Mccammon made it seem like it was going to act like a suit of armor or something.
>Mccammons other book was just adapted recently into that show Teacup but they changed everything about it.
Didn't they also do that with Stinger lol.

What kind of asstarded naming choice was that? Was was wrong with Stinger?

Also, why that and not They Thirst? Too big a budget for tv?

Swan Song is also one of my favorites. Unfortunately I don't think they can do it right given budgetary and time constraints. I'd love to be proven wrong.

I think it would be easier to adapt Swan Song than it is The Stand. The second half of the book is basically The Road with a horror twist. That hardcover edition is my holy grail btw. I own 4 paperback copies of the novel in fear of it going out of print again. Also would love a series adaption of Speaks the Nightbird but maybe its best left in my imagination

They turned it into a mystery box show like Lost. Fucked everything up including the title which means nothing (like the show). They Thirst was a disappointment to me; probably my least favourite Mccammon book ive read so far.

I'm happy people are talking about Swan Song. Current Year adaptations have turned me into a doomer though, I don't want it to be woke nonsense. The funny thing is they have a built-in excuse for casting her guardian to be a hulking black guy like they always do, but for fuck's sake Swan NEEDS to be a cute lovable innocent white girl that stays pure till the end and not some wisecracking mutt that hooks up with some other wisecracking mutt.

I just got back from the theater from seeing it. It is extremely a 'Disney approved' Predator movie. It feels like it isn't trying to be about a hunt, but about an adventure to find a MaGuffin or some just some object. A world that feels less lived in and more like it's plucked out of Half-Life: Alyx playthroughs trying to be a new setting for the franchise -- a franchise that very much doesn't want to be Predator. Quippy partners, a fucking Porg companion, play by numbers plotline. The only positives I had with it are that they kept Dek as the straight man for the comedy and the Weyland-Utani crossover was done in a way that doesn't make me groan or feel forced like most modern crossovers are. A very 5/10 movie. Didn't fucking help that some literal trenchcoat wearing fat guy and a ponytail having older fedora lord didn't have an indoor voice two rows behind me.
