People will cope all they want, but the simple fact is that manga is, by and large, better. The only people who buy comics are diehard nerds that have read them since they were kids. Manga, meanwhile, has a huge audience, not only in native Japan of basically everyone, but even a very wide and varied audience in the West (ignoring, of course, China and Korea which both probably are just as autistic as the Japs when it comes to manga.) If you go into a public library and walk into the kid's section, it's full of comics. It's just not capeshit. Capeshit is still clinging to the Gen X/millennial age bracket hard. The average age in here is probably like 30. Manga has a bit more cross generational appeal so people here are more aware of it, and it is also still more popular. i tried getting into manga, but in general comics for me feel clunky, id rather read a book than go through those pages, especially action scenes. For example, i loved Dorohedoro, so i went through many chapters of the manga, and i finally gave up. it was just a chore, whereas anime was awesome to watch

Initial success of american superheroes comics was the formulaic, procedural nature of it, injecting any sci-fi theme a writer could think of and bending to a more simpler, lighter formula. Then, like soap operas, it got stale and stopped being creative. It becoem overly complicated without being complex. I know there are plenty of good writers but what's the point when the next editor can simply delete all his precious work and stories just because he thinks it doesn't sell? Editors have even more power in the manga industry but you don't have to know Berserk stories to understand what happened in Hokuto no Ken and Gundam. The result is that when you buy a tankobon it feels like a more organic story, comic books often seems like a pastiche of different point of views and art.I'm an ESL and we have the same problem with our own comic books, the -once- most popular comic book heroes are now read only by people over 40 who grew up with them

There are competent female characters but they don't look like feminist caricatures. They are strong, but also beautiful and have their own flaws.Recently, there was Kimetsu no Yaiba. The mangaka is a female. She just not only doesn't go "I'm a woman, btw", but she is actually a shy and private individual who asked shueisha to not even tell her gender to make it harder for people to find out her identity (her gender was found out in a slip of the tongue by her editor). And her manga also doesn't have the "feminist themes". Female characters are likeable, beautiful and also have their own flaws like the male ones.
