Always loved No Country for Old Men.
Saw Eddington and loved it.

Now I'm thinking I need more westerns in a contemporary setting, loaded with deeper themes and meanings. The bleak, fatalistic tone, the awesome vistas, violent shoot-outs, and the reimagining of the classic western tropes recontextualized in the modern day utterly tickles me.

Anything else out there like this?
I really loved Dragged Across Concrete too, but I don't think it counts. Bone Tomahawk was excellent too, but I'm not looking for period settings; I really want them to be set in the modern day with some black humor thrown in.

Red Rock West (1993) is not only a thriller, but also a neo-noir on top of neo western. Same as Lone Star (1996), However, some people call Red Rock West "post-Western"

The Rover looks good.
Last Stop at Yuma County is on the list.

>>215993079
What is Eddington about exactly? From what I hear it’s just a political drama about a small town during COVID, on the other hand your calling it a “Western” and now you have me intrigued, I love a good neo western.

if you've already seen dragged across concrete and bone tomahawk you might as well watch brawl in cellblock 99, it's not a western but same director. also for a more genre specific recommendation I'd say Hell or High Water if you haven't seen that yet.

movie didn't quite manage to get him right, in the book he's set up to be some tough badass special ops vietnam vet who should sure be a match for Anton Sugar only to get unceremoniously ambushed by him like a rookie showing what a force of nature Anton actually is. In the movie he was just le funny quirk man who didn't look behind him on the stairs once.

All that's western is that it's set in New Mexico and the backgrounds look like Breaking Bad.
It's basically your average edgy A24 slop.

>set during Covid craze
>anti-mask Sherriff runs against lefty cuck mayor in the upcomming election
>mayor plans on letting "Not Palantir" construct a data center in the future
>Sherriff is opposed just to spite mayor
>Sherriff gets cucked by cult leader and shoots a homeless man and the mayor and his son dead in a fit of rage
>tries to cover it up and put the blame on other cops
>meanwhile "Not Palantir" has sent a mercenary team to eliminate him
>mercs kill a bunch of people while trying to shoot Sherriff down on the street
>Sherriff ends up with knife in his head but is saved in the last moment
>ffw. 1 year and Sherriff is now new mayor, a vegetable and has to spend his days letting other people talk for him and seeing his wife be pregnant from cult leader on tv
