The most important thing.Movies have a clear arc structure. Shows have not. The arc structure of a show is contained in the episodes. Thats why every show feels like a soap opera, and not like a journey with a beginning, middle and end.

The problem with tv shows these days I think is they're like a 12 hour movie chopped up into 12 parts, where they really should be a 2 hour movie instead. The extra 10 hours is just mundane drama and boring side plots and scenes dragged out way longer than they should be just to fill time. Instead of something like X-Files where there's a different interesting story each week and also an interesting series-long story underneath.

One, failed movie directors replaced experienced and talented showrunners so they think they are making le cinema but are really just hacks. Second, the death of episodic structure left most shows with massive structural problems because now they need the whole season to be the story. Most stories (there are exceptions) do not lend themselves to this and so they put the setup in episode 1, stretch the shit out of 6 episodes, then cram a clumsy plot resolution and cliffhanger into the last 15 minutes of episode 8. The season-arc also means if the story is crap, the whole season is a wash. Finally, the lost art of making episodes on a fast turnaround combined with the streaming models means makes it rife for time wasting episodes because the viewers are just so desperate to get ones that they are much less critical of them. The whole thing is fucked.

On paper, series give the creators more time to spend developing the plot, the characters etc In practice, you're getting the same amount of development as in a regular movie, except that it's spread out across x hours of content where the majority is comprised of generic filler that has nothing to do with the core story.
