Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters, November 2025 fan-translation of Chieko Schrader's Japanese-language script: https://mega.nz/file/n94ljCoR#7QJZMjUDqNXoW5bU4XiTXlfFSa-fBfm2WrgvBFC4w2E

Paul Schrader openly admits on the commentary for Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters that he doesn't know Japanese, and on set would give commands that would then be translated and fed to the cast and crew second-hand. The whole film was essentially directed by proxy. For the writing, Paul and Leonard Schrader wrote a screenplay in English, which was then completely re-written by Leonard Schrader's wife Chieko Schrader, who is of Japanese ethnicity, so she could extensively redraft it with the depth of cultural familiarity required for the dialogue and scenario to read natural to the intended Japanese theatrical audience. When the Japanese release didn't happen, it was given a limited release in the West, with an English narration and official subtitles that not only differ almost completely from the English draft script, but for entire scenes diverge entirely into different topics to Chieko Schrader's words that the Japanese actors in the film are actually saying. The official translation is not 'bad', it's an entirely different proposition, an alternate script.

Until now there has not been a set of subtitles that attempts to translate Chieko Schrader's Japanese-language shooting script. This release attempts to rectify this. I also took the liberty of attaching these subs to a copy of the film where I cut to the DVD release version for the last scene of the Runaway Horses segment, because they tried to digitally recolor the sky orange for the Criterion release and it looks like reheated boomerfied garbage; if you think Ridley Scott is a menace to his own legacy try looking up the Criterion version of this scene compared to what's presented here.
>>
>>216009320
There are three versions of the translation attached in the .mkv file:
- Literal Edition: Hyper-literal translation following Chieko Schrader's Japanese script, for the first time. Set as default.
- Liberal Edition: Rewritten in a more natural English register with adjustments where e.g. translating more literally would leave the meaning unclear for a newbie English-language audience. Some of you may like this, others not, which is why I included the more precisely literal version as default.
- 'Queer Theory' Edition: Same as the Liberal edition, but with a couple of lines from the pre-production draft script that's available online that reference Mishima's supposed homosexuality re-inserted.
>>
>>216009329
As fans of the film might know, the production faced hefty censorship and interference from Mishima's widow and the elements in Japan who were unhappy about the film being made, which among other things led to Ogata being re-cast as Mishima after Schrader's original (better) choice being harassed out of the role by right-wingers, and any explicit reference to Mishima's sexuality being veto'd by the widow which led to them using Kyoko's House instead of Forbidden Colors as originally planned. Schrader tried to play dirty by shoe-horning in a reference to homosexuality in the English-language narration used in the US theatrical release, but imo it's more forced than the original plan shown in the draft script PDF circulating online. One of these cut lines that was intended for the narration has its timings the visuals it would be referring to retained in the final film, with the narration replaced with a different line where before it was going to describe his yearning for another boy. This may suggest the line was cut after shooting before Ken Ogata's narration was recorded in post. Since the original release already deviates massively from what is being spoken by the cast to insert such a reference after the fact with less attention to context, I thought it would be an interesting experiment to see how re-inserting these draft lines where they were intended to occur changes the read of the film. Fuller notes on this aspect will be available in my translation notes when this goes live on my Soulseek shares under my current username there, Rrobynne Mk. II, which I hope will be in the next week or two.

I'll keep the Mega link up for about a week. I recommend holding off on sharing this file all over the internet, Internet Archive etc. til it goes live on Soulseek, as a lot of questions or critique people have of the translation may be addressed by my translation notes, which include the transcription of the original spoken Japanese and my confidence ratings for each line of my own translation, as well as reasoning for individual translation choices. Once that goes up feel free to share and archive the whole package together wherever, but I wanted to get this out there in time for the 55th anniversary next week for you guys to watch. I'll post here again when my notes are finished for sharing. Enjoy!

>Overrated WW2 drama. Bergman looks good, but not great and those lights in her eyes are very distracting. Bogie gives a great physical performance, very expressive in the eyes and mouth. Some funny lines, but not a lot happens in this and it's basically set in two locations. Add a few shootouts and some more spectacle, and maybe you'd have a good movie here. As it stands, pretty dull and with an ending that might as well have "BUY WAR BONDS!" at the end title screen. I prefer my wartime propaganda a little more entertaining a la The Sea Hawk. I didn't like this the first time and now I like it even less.

If it's your chart, then what we think isn't all that important because at the end of the day, it's just a bit of a fun (and as I said, I like JenCon anyway).
>It feels wrong removing him from the chart
I didn't mean to suggest that. My point was that he has a similar kind of historical claim to Gish and keeping him on could be justified on that ground just as Gish's inclusion could be in spite of them not being posted all that much anymore.

>Ex-army officer accidentally kills a woman’s son, tries to make up for it by escorting the funeral procession through dangerous Indian territory.
Why is this so underrated? It's well shot. Has a classic story of guilt and redemption, with great character dynamics. Tasteful musical cues all around. Greed, lust, treason, shame and hatred... These passions are the motor of this picture.
Read that it had a troublesome production and the crew supposedly carried the hapless direction of Peckinpah (this was his first feature after all)... But this small factoid can't possibly weigh heavy enough to sink the value of this film. But no, contrary to the middling ratings, it's indeed a good watch. Strongly recommended.

Oh by the way, something I haven't seen mentioned anywhere before, as well as the recoloring in Runaway Horses, the whole film being re-graded more saturated, and the insertion of the short deleted scene with the old Zen priest, the Criterion cut also has some timing differences - the shot with the title card for Kyoko's House is shortened by half compared to the theatrical cut, also various background audio is mixed more prominently such as when Osamu visits the loan shark. Lots of little changes like what happened with Miller's Crossing on Criterion.

>>216010903
No probs. I think working in two radically different languages in my brain for 3 years on and off has slightly precipitated my latent Celtic schizotypy so after I do the only other translation I'd already committed to ~4 years ago already which I've yet to do, I don't think I want to waste any more of my life on this sort of thing or I'll never get round to doing any creative work of my own (unless I find a native French speaker dedicated enough to help me with doing fresh translations of all Carax's films, because he's the last true-great master imo). Between this, my political work and moving this year I've had no time for any other hobbies besides this bastard thing, I'm glad to say I'm satisfied with the result. Captioning in particular is a slog.

It's okay, the site has been getting more and more polluted since 2020. Zoomer tourists have gotten a hold of the charts in recent years, hence why something like Be Quiet and Drive by Deftones is considered the 16th best single of all time; that is indicative of the decay in taste that the site has suffered (which is exactly like /mu/, but less pronounced).
The good thing is that we still don't have vocal /pol/tards on the site, and it would be good to keep it that way, so... apology accepted, I guess.

Before anyone asks, it's because I think it's one of the best works on the compounding effects of denial and trauma on society, and being geared for a younger audience, it'd be good thing for it to be un-fucked for Gen Alpha and onward given how Gen Z are discovering it through the Netflix version, which while actually a broad improvement on ADV's version imo, certainly more literally accurate, completely fails to capture the more austere tone of socially conservative Japan, opting for a more generic tone averaged out to cater for a global streamslop audience, and the traces of influence from mid-20th century US sci-fi. Modern fans of Evangelion don't seem to realise it's the product of Gerry Anderson's live-action series' and stories like Flowers For Algernon as much as of Japanese tokusatsu. When I was younger in the 00s the line was always "Evangelion is an anime about depression", but it's actually about trauma - in particular, Anno struggling with what today would be described as the effects of CPTSD on his personality as an adult as a result of his disabled father beating him as a child (his dad was an amputee following an industrial accident, and struggled with unaddressed trauma from it himself because of the strictures of Japanese culture). Across the board and irregardless of politics, the effects of cycles of trauma and denial on patterns of behaviour and societal events is going to be something the younger generations will grow up encountering thanks to the groundwork being laid today and in recent times, and along with Twin Peaks it's one of those works out of the pop-entertainment canon I'd choose for all kids today to be brought up on if I was a parent (I have a painful genetic illness so in practice that's moot), so I'd prefer a non-shitty version enter circulation ASAP. Sephirotic's version is decent, but can be improved upon.

>deftones were always really popular, weird thing to focus on
Not really... I've been a diehard Deftones fan since 2009 and back then they were considered the token "good" nu metal band. Today, they're seen as more of a zoomer Metallica, aka, a band that everybody likes and that every metalhead must listen to. My problem with that is that, even though Around the Fur is a great album, it's not top 200 material like the zoomers think, and while ATF's score goes up, true works of art like Master of Puppets lose more and more average ratings year after year. My worry is that someday the canon will have changed so much that the foundational classics which defined music / cinema will be lost in a sea of trends and algorithms, and that is very sad.
>isn't that also reflected on the entire internet?
Yeah, but the idea of sites like RYM and 4chan was keeping a canon which was essentially separated from the mainstream, and now the lines are blurred. Sometimes, I feel like the TikTok kids might have better taste than the so called /mu/tants and RYMers, and that is worrisome.
In the early 10s, people on RYM and /mu/ really tried their best to develop unique tastes and be different, searching for obscure releases and filtering what was considered mainstream bullshit from the charts and the userbase, but right now, the opposite has happened: it seems that the more basic your taste is, the more accepted you are, which is not how things used to be. These sites used to be really patrician and a good source to find new music / cinema, so seeing them turn into normie central over the course of five years is sad. We need a retvrn.

When it comes to all this stuff though, the arthouse films we love especially, I think we all have to be serious thought about how we carry the influence of the kind of art we want to see forward. I'm always shilling age-appropriate reccs to friends of mine who become parents, and after I'm done with my translation notes I'm setting up a secondary, locked Soulseek account with all my uncompressed blu-ray rips to greenlight my IRL friends individually to download from (I already have a primary, un-locked Soulseek account where I share plenty of rare stuff without restriction, which is where the Mishima translation is going and where my copy of Carax's Pierre ou Les ambiguites is already). I'll also be screening my Mishima translation for locals at a community centre soon. If we want quality film and television to have any kind of purchase among the generations coming up and for its influence to continue into the future, we have to think practically about the audiovisual traffic that is entering the kids' heads and how we get the good stuff to take up a bigger proportion of that bandwidth. It's like survival of the fittest, if we don't want good-quality art to fade into irrelevance it has to not only be preserved and archived but fed to those who won't otherwise experience anything like it or its presence will simply reach a dead end, a finite extent, sooner rather than later. I put a bunch of films I like on a microSD and stuck it in my best friend's computer because she's always saying she doesn't have any hard drive space to watch my blu-ray rips. Always gotta be on the lookout for ways of making it easier for normies sick of the slop to experience the good stuff.

It's been some years since I last watched it, but I know one will be the Kaworu "I love you" line. I can already tell you I'll take the same approach as with Mishima, a literal translation + a liberal translation. So I suspect the liberal translation already will end up being "In other words, I love you" because it ties in to the ED of the series so obviously. "I like you" may sincerely end up being the more correct option for a hyper-literal approach but that's the thing, being honest with myself as a translator has led me to believe nobody doing this thing can seriously take their ego entirely out of it, and anyone who pretends they can is kidding themselves. Instead, why not displace ones' ego, i.e. ones' more controversial interpretive decisions, into a specific container? By releasing two translation versions side-by-side, one more hyper-literal for purists and one more interpretive, I can hedge my bets and by presenting a result with a degree of ambiguity/uncertainty, please more people and actually have a result that is more honest and in keeping with the shape of the reality of the situation - because reality itself is indeed contradictory and ambiguous. Slightly schizo way of looking at it but I think it checks out in the end better than firmly saying it's *definitely* one way exclusive of the other. The fact is iirc a lot of the issue over the Kaworu line arises as a result of the ways like/love are categorised in language, with respect to context, differently between the two cultures, rather than only cause of trying to swerve it sounding gay.

The EoE lines, dunno OTOH but I assume they're lore-related. I plan to do the whole thing - yet to see if there's enough benefit to be squeezed out of doing the Rebuilds, a lot of the dialogue in those is technobabble but maybe there's some emotional nuances the official translations are missing that make characterisations come off more shallow and decisions more daft than is necessary.

>Bloated crime drama. Leo is unconvincing as a whiny pothead loser, Sean Penn puts on a silly voice. There's probably a good 1hr 30min movie buried in here that focuses on one or two characters-the final car chase is unique, the scene where they run across rooftops, the riot scene, all good. The trouble is the action is never truly spectacular-it just feels like 20 iterations on your standard midbudget indie action setpiece that anyone worth their salt could shoot- there's no beautifully blocked out action sequence that you might see in Death Sentence. Felt deeply personal at times, in a bad way-I simply don't care about PTA's relationship with his mixed-race daughter. Also some bizarre pretentious choices in terms of lighting-I have no idea why every single domestic (or is it place of safety?) scene is yellow and I don't care-there didn't seem to be any payoff for this where there was a domestic scene that wasn't yellow. I have actually managed to talk myself down from a 3 star rating for this. It's impressive, purely by virtue of the budget, but it's not good and not a good demonstration of PTA's talents, or lack therof. This strangely reminded me of 13 Hours-a third the budget, far more spectacular, far better demonstration of Michael Bay's talents as an action filmmaker. Stick to Adam Sandler buying pudding cups or Daniel Day Lewis delivering monologues about milkshakes my man, an action auteur you are not.

hmmm, nothing about libtard politics in there

Damn, is this what you did for Mishima? Are you going to do a write up talking about the work you did, how you went about the translation, details, etc?

>False equivocation. The post was so vague it could be interpreted a million ways
It's obviously not 1-1 correspondence, but in the context of /film/ "you know what to do" is understood to refer to reporting (further bolstered in this case by explicit references to off-topic posting). Any other explanation of the utterance is disingenuous.

>>216014888
Oh yeah. I always wondered if "How nauseating" might be a more proper fit for the last line in terms of meaning, but there may be tonal issues. I'll have to see what English register the period dialect, formality etc. markers in the dialogue across the series and different characters transposes into best first. e.g. Mishima has bursts of quite flowery and archaic language in Japanese that imo get translated rather dryly and straight-laced in his official English translations. One section that's going to be of interest to me is the Instrumentality sequence in EoE, none of the translations have ever really felt especially coherent to me.
>>
>>216015692
The Japanese script for Mishima has an idealism vs. materialism, dualism vs. monism theme running through the narration that's mostly absent outside the "pen and sword" motif in the American version. With the war draft business, but also with the insertion of the lines about his sexuality especially, you can see the central conflict of the film become Mishima's struggle to resolve the contradiction between his inner world/drives and the circumstances of his place and time. In the Japanese that stuff gets described in pretty oblique language to the point it's easy to fudge the meaning and translate it too literally in a way where it's not technically incorrect, but what it's trying to say is not gotten across if you don't have the life experience to be familiar with what is being described. I suspect something like that has happened with the Instrumentality sequence in past translations, all that stuff about 'what lies at the end of your dream' doesn't actually present a clear argument from A to B where, if I remember rightly from previous investigations, essentially what Anno's trying to say is that a dream is a dream and a thing is a thing, and it's only where one ends that the other can begin. The 00s fandom did a lot of annoying yank things such as insisting Anno is punching down on otaku when what he's really saying across the series is that escapism is usually a false economy, not that it's morally bad.

>>216014970
Okay, I'll take a look.
>>
>>216015064
Is that not normal for translating things? I thought about writing up something like that but I wasn't sure how much depth would be required if a lot of it is common sense/standard for the act of translation. A lot of looking up clusters of Japanese characters at a time on various websites and dictionaries, keeping multiple readings up in the air, and then having sentences reveal themselves slotting into place all at once via similar contextual examples or source material knowledge/life experience, similar to solving a substitution cipher.
