Asuka is the same as Shinji.that said, yeah, people who say it is a positive movie thematically are a bit off the mark I think. not that it doesn't have some positive messaging, but it's more like just realism. it's just raw, unfiltered emotion - all the emotions. pain, joy, love, heartbreak, acceptance, shame, desire, disgust. Anno when making this movie was clearly not healed, or totally spiritually enlightened. but he was clearly at some stage of spiritual development and beginning to see the bigger picture and make some sense of things.the Rebuilds are very flawed movies and artistically nowhere near the level of EoE, but I think 3.0+1.0 is worth watching to see an Anno who actually has healed, to what extent that he can, and made some peace with himself. the ending to that movie is the positive, healing ending that some people think EoE is.
