Which one is better?
The non-Hollyweird one of course.
Rare example of the remake being better. The original film is this kind of wacky genre mix that's not unusual for Korean (or Japanese too for that matter) cinema but the results are very mixed. The attempts at genuine sentimentality don't work as the main character is an actual psycho even if he ends up technically correct. His partner (a girlfirend in the original) is barely in the film and is basically useless. The CEO is typical evil greedy man, and that's kinda the point of the original movie which really is just another critique of capitalism in Korea. The detective plot is useless as well, just feels like padding. The detective character exists just to die, yet we follow him for a while, it's just padding. There are a lot of contrived story beats in the original film too that are smoothed out in the remake. In particular the scene where the MC kills his mother is utterly idiotic in the original. He poisons her, and just stands here while a doctor proclaims her dead and somehow doesn't notice that the guy poisoned her. In Bugonia the scene is done better with how he escapes through the window. The darker tone in Bugonia is much more fitting for the material, and the detective subplot is cut in favour of more character interaction. Cousin instead of girlfriend is also a good choice, it makes for stronger motive, and the cousin is actually present in the movie instead of being absent for most of it.
>>216014487making the CEO a woman made the film much more edgy, have to give it to Yorgos. generally the less comedic tone adds a lot.
