Magellan is more celebrated by the Spanish than by the Portuguese. Of course he's one of the great Portuguese figures in history but he did work for the Spanish crown and played a big role in his history.
Portuguese people generally celebrate Vasco da Gama more as the leading figure of the age of exploration.

and in this house, Magellan is a hero, end of story.

Not true, Vasco da Gama only outshines Magellan and Cabral in american media whenever Portugual is brought up, in the actual country those 3 are of equal importance at a cultural and curricular level, Da Gama only gets a tad more reputation because he features in the Lusiads, a mandatory school reading. The portuguese government even baptized a very powerful PC entirely made in Portugal after Magellan.

She is involuntarily right, though that truth is not shameful, not even in her bad faithed strawman "deconstruction" attempt:
>An Idiot Saves the President
Script basically writes itself. You have to be a major failure in screenwriting not to pull this one off. 7/10 worst case scenario.
>Rich Boy Hero 4
The combination of financial means with efforts to thwart crime provides for an interesting combination: Given his money, the protag has access to important people, technology, tools at his disposal etc. See Batman or Iron Man. It is also modern implementation of the Ständeklausel, arguably a constraint that had a positive effect on creative output.
>Silent Hero Journey Boy
The journey, or the chronology of hardships that have to be overcome, is a universal theme in almost all cultures since the inception of oral narration or written words. Arguably, it is the core of drama.
>Fight Fight Fight
Complex choreography, clear cut good vs. evil dichotomies and fast paced action is a welcome alternative to (equally welcome) introspective material. Even people with Met subscriptions sometimes enjoy pop music. Misguided purism is mostly a virtue signal.
>Boats
The juxtaposition of an unforgiving environment like the open sea with the task of a crew of holding it altogether was maybe most aptly painted by Rudolf G. Binding (and incidentally, referenced in Das Boot):
>Where no mother looks for us,
>Where no woman crosses our path,
>Where everything is without love,
>Where only reality reigns,
>Gruesome and grand,
>That makes firm and proud.
>Unforgettable and much deeper
>It touches the heart of man
>Than all the love in the world.
>And we felt: This was the measure.

It is sad that this Twitter influencer fails to understand this. She deserves pity.

Anyway, just my 5 cents. Off to my daily dose of Josquin Desprez.

It's just modern day stoicism, which is based and the ultimate philosophy.

Portugal opposed Magellan's expedition by attempting to stop it and even sent ships to intercept him at sea. After King Manuel I of Portugal refused to fund his voyage, Magellan went to Spain and was commissioned by the Spanish crown, his family was jailed and it it even worse, Magellean wasn't able to finish the expedition and died in Philippines, his second in charge, Juan Sebastián Elcano, was the first man to complete a circumnavigation of the world and received a coat of arms with the motto "Primus circumdedisti me" (You were the first to circumnavigate me).
