the upper middle class Blacks in the 1950s.

What did Martin Luther King fight for if you had all those Huxtable niggas with their PHDs and shit, having astronomy and fishing as their main hobby?
Who can relate to those characters? Not even blacks.

>>216016597
I know this is a troll post, but there are still many black families like this, they just don't get talked about

Yeah, like 5% of black families in the 1950s. Not EVERY single black in a town.

They wrote them like white characters but with black actors.
Reminds me of picrel, but at last in Malcolm in the Middle it was self aware and it was a joke that they were all upperclass bourgeois.
But in Derry, it's just disregarding history altogether.

In the middle of suburban white neighbourhoods? No that is horseshit nigger
>>
>>216016772
This is the most unbelievable part. There were upstanding blacks, but the North was even more segregated than the South was and for far longer. There's no way in hell some small town in Maine was going to abide by an integrated neighborhood in the 1950s.
>>
>>216016838
The upstanding blacks lives with their own. They would never move to a white neighbourhood. What about the white kids befriending niggs? Yea I don't thinks so, especially in those times.

Miles Davis came from an upper-middle class family in Illinois. His mother was a violinist and his father was a dentist. Seems like a stupid thing to complain about.
>>
once again I find myself saying: "there is not a single white male protagonist on this show"
>>
Even though the negro problem existed back then, despite the mythology about cocaine ruining their community the culture being pushed wasn't shoes, bouncy hoop ball or shooting up your neighborhood over a color. SOME, few, existed.

Back then if a show was called Surf Dracula you'd see that fool surfing im every episode. Now the whole season's about a random bunch of niggas, a filler episode about how he got the board and he surfs for five minutes at the end.
>>
It's also funny how the black military guys that hang out with Dick just act like howler monkey jigaboo stereotypes. The writing is fucking awful.
>>
I've only marathoned the first two eps but so far none of the whites have been racist to the Huxtables. Maybe the military guy with his mean looks but that's been it really.

I donated blood for money yesterday. Whole lobby was filled with nogs and I saw one other white guy donating in the 3+ hours i was there. Then they walk me to my seat to take the blood and gee whiz who do they sit me next to in a room full of people and open seats? The one white guy. I wonder if he noticed, not a big confidence boost having only blacks and messicans as the nurses but the black older lady who did my physical was good she was old school.

By the 1950s, thousands of African Americans had earned doctoral degrees across fields such as physics, math, chemistry, education, psychology, and the humanities. A few examples:
>Edward Bouchet (PhD, Yale, 1876 — long before the 1950s)
>Elmer Samuel Imes (PhD in physics, 1918)
>Charles Henry Turner (PhD in zoology, 1907)
>Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander (PhD in economics, 1921)
>Ernest Everett Just (PhD in biology, 1916)
There were Black physicists and astronomers active during or shortly after the 1950s:
>Benjamin Peery – earned his PhD in astronomy in 1962; he was working toward it in the late 1950s.
>Astrophysicist Arthur B.C. Walker Jr. – earned his PhD in 1962; active as a student in the 1950s.
Fishing was (and remains) an extremely common hobby among African Americans, especially in the rural South and along coastal or river communities. Some sources:
>Scott Giltner’s Hunting and Fishing in the New South: Black Labor and White Leisure after the Civil War shows that African Americans in the South relied on hunting and fishing for subsistence, income, and a degree of independence from white landowners, even as whites framed the same activities as “sport.”
>Dionne Hoskins-Brown’s article “Tales of Landings and Legacies: African Americans in Georgia’s Coastal Fisheries” documents African American fishing communities, family fleets, and long-running fishing traditions along the Georgia coast from the late 19th century into the 20th.
>In the study “Visitation Among Local African American Fishers at Congaree”, the author investigates fishing practices and connections among local African American fishers in South Carolina, showing how fishing is embedded in community life
>In the article “Teach a Man to Fish: Captain Fred and the Power of Water”, it is noted that during the plantation era and beyond, African Americans were “virtually the only marine fishermen” in certain coastal Georgia contexts.

Yes they weren't a huge # like today's "humanities phDs" but they existed. Not necessarily politically active bc they were few. OP doesn't know the ghetto image/reality was made worse by the Iran-Contra crack dealing by CIA: finding a black market for crack to fund arms dealings in LatAm, by luring blacks outside of stable "job track" an "easy" path of dysfunctions and crime rings. Rappers glorified this vicious cycle as their only way out, when in tthe 50s-70s very gifted blacks could advance academically + professionally if they weren't shut out by racists. BUYDEN was still fighting desegregation by the early 70s to win votes, remember.

OP, "change" doesn't happen in an uniform way across the country. Some people do better in some areas where the hiring/acceptance wants them, and that's how migration occurs.

Most economic historians agree on roughly the following:

>Only a small minority of Black families were solidly “middle class” by 1950.
>Estimates typically place the Black middle class at 10–15% of African American households around 1950.
>The “upper-middle class” segment was extremely small, likely well under 5%, usually consisting of professionals (doctors, lawyers, teachers, ministers), small business owners, and federal civil-service workers.

5% and all of them are in fucking Derry.
>>
>>216017779
derry is bangor. bangor is 88% white and less than 3% black in current year. there were no middle class negros in bangor in the 50s. if they had any skills or wealth they wouldnt stay in bangor.

How much did a medium sized telescope cost in 1950 and what percentage of african american families could afford one at the time considering their living standards and essential expenses?

>Typical 1950 price range
>Medium amateur refractor (60–75mm): $50–$100 (1950 US dollar)
>Median Black family income, 1950: about $950–$1,200 per year
>(White median ≈ $2,200–$2,700 for comparison.)
>Reasonable historical estimate:
>Only about 5–10% of African American families in 1950 could realistically afford a medium telescope.
>This accounts for: income distribution, essential budget constraints, rarity of discretionary spending, purchase priority (telescope viewed as a luxury hobby tool)

Is pennywise constantly in a clown form in the books? Or is he also constantly shapeshifting like in this show?
