I think this is one of those things that only english people could understand. its based on english school groups.Simply put there is a house loyalty so in general at school people from different houses would not be mixing but competing against each other.Not like 4 friends one from each house, it would be four friends of one house vs four friends from other houses.

it seemed like the houses are split up in ways that would make it difficult for people from other houses to easily form friendships and hang out with each other. like the gryffindor guys shared bedchambers and common areas and you're just naturally going to more easily form friendships with people you have that kind of proximity with.

So while there were maybe 3 different year 7 X house classes, and in each class you knew your main class mates, then when maths is on, the 3 classes are split into ability...which is termed by tests of course.This is classic english (british) school system stuff, probably been like this for centuries.Personally i didnt take notice of it, or have any house loyalty at school I just took 1 day at a time and school was just an inconvenience to my real life, outside of school but I am/was aware of it.Though I do remember their being some sort of peer bonding between younger and later years where older kids would take younger kids under their wing based on being from their same house.Of course we all had same head of year teachers based on house too, though again I didnt take notice of it, they were just teachers to me.
