The book version seemed like he was just a totally stand up guy that went totally out-of-character crazy for a very short time. The ring-lust of the film version was one of his defining characteristics.

Ring-temptation of the book version was only very faintly simmering beneath the surface. From what I can remember anyway.

The opposite. Book Boromir was nuanced, film Boromir was one dimensional "give me the ring" guy. They did it worse to Faramir whos essentially Boromir 2 in the movies and is nothing like his brother in the books.
